Distributor rebuild

I have a 1965 I.H. 504 gas tractor. What I was wondering before I tear into it, is if the distributor can be rebuilt? Or am I S.O.L.?

You can buy a rebuilt one or, if you have the skill and the one you have is not in too bad a condition, do it yourself. It"s a simple mechanism.

most distributors can be rebuilt IF you can deal with the bushings. I have a lathe and an arbor press, so I have no issues rebuilding them. There are other ways to do it, but those 2 things makes the job much easier.

The bushings will have to be made as ya can not get them . When making the bushings use Oil Lite bronze and before you take the old one out index the grove in the bottom bushing as it serves as a drain , When you make the bottom bushing cut the grove on the outside and on the inside there is a spiral grove that needs to be in there for lubing of the bottom bushing. And the old bushings come out hard.

Yes but depends how many parts need replaced. Retail parts cost for some distributor parts from IH will put you over the cost of a new replacement distributor that some places were selling.
Unless they quit furnishing the distributor bushing in the last year or so it should be around $45 through dealer. Bushing part # 373577R91. Shaft over $100. Springs around $30.
Should also say I don't know if anyone sells a 504 replacement with the original advance curve and total advance. Lots of IH distributors will bolt on.
