450 TA Follow-up

Well, now a follow-up question. I have gotten a few pages run off from the factory shop manual on my 450, but before I start plowing through them, I wanted to ask another question: I got the lever in place properly, hooked up something heavy, and headed uphill in third gear, and pulled the lever back--no perceptible change. Then I released it and let it go forward--again, no change. Engine did not change tone, tractor did not slow down, or speed up, it just kept pulling up the hill in third gear. If somebody was gonna hazard a guess, what would those symptoms point to, or rule out? In the meantime, I'm off to reading a bunch of pages from the shop manual on adjustment. Thanks, Hugh

T/A clutch is not releasing. Unless you know for sure how the tractor was doing before the handle was removed its hard to pinpoint the cause. Could be just stuck, but not likely if the link between the main and T/A clutch shaft was actually releasing the T/A clutch. T/A clutch release bearing or holder bad, reason for handle removal sometimes. Heck its hard to tell, have found all kinds of contraptions put in to make the T/A clutch plate solid to the T/A clutch carrier so they could keep using the tractor without fixing.

The nut that holds the TA clutch carrier to the shaft is behind the clutch disc. The nut will work loose & screw out against the back side of the TA clutch disc. Will not let the TA clutch release causing the kind of problem you have. Can get to it with a front split behind the engine.
Just something to look for.

theres a pretty easy to follow youtube video on how to adjust the TA try it. if it doesn"t work
then you may have a problem

Yes front split at clutch housing. You can then work through the top cover on the TA housing. Also remove the clutch shaft out the front. You can then remove the TA clutch assy. The nut that retains the clutch carrier has a lock tab washer that is supposed keep the nut from coming loose. Will be good to inspect the condition of the TA clutch & main clutch while tractor is split.
The 2 seals for the IPTO shaft & front seal for the TA planetary carrier should also be replaced.

You sound like you know your 450's with TA's! Where did you buy your parts? And if you don't mind, drop me a line by way of email so that if I get in a real stupid fix I can avoid posting on YT where everybody knows about it! Thanks, Hugh

We all get in a stupid fix once in a while. Being honest about it might - hey, it could happen - stop someone else from taking the wrong bolt out at the wrong time. Then again, maybe not.

Is the tractor hard to shift?

With a good TA, the tractor should be hard to shift if there is something wrong with the TA clutch that's keeping it from releasing.

If the tractor shifts easily that means one of two things:

1. The TA is no good. The low side is out.
2. The linkage to the TA lever is out of adjustment, but the TA is otherwise OK.

Get off the tractor and find where the linkage from the TA lever goes to. Pull the TA lever. Does the arm that the TA linkage is connected to move? Push the clutch pedal down. The same arm should move the same amount.

If the TA lever doesn't move that arm, or doesn't move that arm as much as the clutch pedal does, it's out of adjustment.

All the mechanical TAs operate the same way, from the super MTA up to the 560.

Kevin, if you don't mind, drop me a line by way of email, it is open. P.S., thanks to all for the helpful input...and for nobody saying "you need to buy a shop manual"--this time of year, with a wife and family, that's one purchase that's not gonna happen! Hugh
