Please help farmall m coil trouble and picking corn

Hi as always I know you guys will be able to tell me the problem I'm stuck in the field now with it. It's a 48 M and has mag the coil went out on it and being a young farmer that's tight for money I hooked up an external coil that you guys suggested in prior post I have it that the tractor runs and idles smoother then ever but as soon as it is warm it starts breaking up when it's under a load. I put new pionts condenser rotor cap and checked my carb setting please help we got raing coming.
Thanks Aaron

Is your M 6 volt or have you updated to 12 volt. Was the coil you added new? Are all your connection tight? Are the wires good? Did you add a condenser for electric ignition and disconnect the mag condenser? If it is 12 volt, you may need a resistor.

So your saying you have the mag wired up as a distributor right?? First thing to check is your spark. Make sure it is a good blue/white and will jump a 1/4 inch gap or more. If the spark is good go on to a carb problem. #1 when was the last time you serviced the air cleaner?? It could be full of dirt and water or ice. Does choking it help or hurt?? If choking it helps you may need to open up the main jet a tad bit. If it hurt then need to close up the main a bit

Thanks for the quick responses it's 12 v with an alternator on it. It's a brand new coil from napa with a built in resister I still have the mag points and condenser in it is that wrong if so what do I need to run? I went over all connections clean air intake and pulling the choke in doesn't help it will stall the tractor out but doesn't help it from breaking it up.
Thanks Aaron

Hi.
Since you have coverted your Mag. to a Dist maybe try opening the point gap to .020. I also use and external restistor on all my engines that have Dist.

Cheers

Russ

ok I just tried opening the points didn't notice a difference where would I get a resister and where does it go also does it matter what type of condenser should I use one for a mag or one for a distributer?

Issue one: The new coil is just a 14 volt capable set of windings rated for 12volt operation, it has no internal resistor. There is no reason to use an additional resistor, it will cause poor spark for sure.
Issue two resetting the points to .020 could have helped if the shaft was worn, or the timing retarded some. If it didn"t help, the issue may be fuel supply to the carb. Open the load screw on the front of the lower edge one turn at a time to see if it gets better. If not put it back where it was. If a fuel line filter has been put on it, take it off and use a hose where it was located. Make sure there is full 1/8" stream of fuel at the carb (there is a strainer at the fitting!) Keep us informed. Jim

Hi.

Resistors should be available at any parts store, they are installed on the wire from the power source to the coil. They can be mounted on the frame or anywhere it is convient. Are your new points showing signs of burning or is your coil getting hot? If they are it is an indication that a resistor is required, if not you may not need one. Missing under load could also be some crud in the hign speed side of the carb., or maybe you got a shot of bad gas. Hope you get it running soon.

Cheers

Russ

He indicates the use of a true 12v coil in a response below. Putting a resistor in it would be sure to cause a low voltage situation. Jim

You might have gotten a bad condensor, they will act like that. Also try advancing the timing just a tick. Typically an ih should be a little cold natured to start and run rough when cold then smooth out good when warmed up. Sounds like she's not timed quite right.

IF you already have a TRUE 12V coil marked "no external resistor required", then you do NOT need a resistor.

Probably wouldn't hurt to try it, but I think it would make things worse, not better. Putting a resistor on a true 12V coil would just make it produce a weak spark.

well as always with all your input my old m is purring like a mountain lion turns out Todd's thought were the correct problem I put another used condenser in it and hasn't gave a single problem. Thanks again guys
