How to Hand Crank a 1951 C

Well I finally found out that my starter bendex was broke, and due to Christmas I don"t have the funds to fix currently. So I made my own handcrank and want to know that steps are needed to start.

My farmall has been converted to 12 volts so don"t know if this matters in regards to the process

Not hard, if the tractor was previouly starting easy before the starter broke. Check and double check to make sure the tractor is not in gear. Good idea to set the foot brakes so the tractor does not roll when being cranked.
Choke the same way as if using the starter. My C normally takes one crank at 3/4 choke and will fire on the next crank with the choke at less than 1/2. I set the trottle between 1/3 and 1/2. Enough for the cold motor to continue running but not so much the motor races at full RPM. Hope this helps.

i half hitch the crank to start.

place crank into engine, turn engine slow until crank reaches bottom, pull sharply up 1/2 turn, repeat, until tractor fires. do not place thumb around crank handle (if engine kicks back, it will not break your thumb, doing it this way)

make switch is on.

Not to repeat but if it was starting good before starter broke, it will crank. Otherwise you will need to check flow of gas to the carb, pull a plug to see if it is wet after cranking a few turns, this will tell you gas is getting to the cyclinders. No gas could be clogged gas line or clogged carb. If still no go, check for spark at a plug. It would not hurt to clean and check plug gaps. Should be a blue streak about 1/4 inch. If not check the condition of points. My last no start was solved by changing the condensor.

So before the starter broke was it a easy start tractor or did you have to spin it over a good bit to start?? To hand crank one every thing has to be just right or you will crank it till your blue in the face and not start it. If you really need it and have help pull start it. Also are you sure you have the ignition wire hooked up to the battery since your likely to not have the starter on it.

Make sure timing is TDC or later, you can crank timing up so it runs good with 12V starting. It will kick back if you hand crank.

gave up on the hand crank idea before I break something that can't be welded and will require a cast, screws, and pins. Just rolled it off and popped the clutch. Told Mrs. Clause that Santa needs a starter rebuild kit for Christmas.

Thanks again guys

Even though ours has a good starter I start it with the crank once in awhile! It makes me feel good to know its in that good shape. If you hand crank an engine properly there is nothing to worry about, lots of good advice on here.

My A started easily when hand cranked. The ignition should be retarded a bit for hand cranking. Advanced ignition timing can make it kick back on you and harder to start.
Obviously you have the ignition switch on right?
You may not need any choke at all where you are...could've flooded it out by now..

Hi, Tractor should start quite easily with the hand crank. Set brakes and double check that the transmission is in "N". When facing the tractor turn engine over with the crank until your at about"7:00 as on the clock" quick pull upwards and usually this is all that's required for starting. Don't lock your thumb around the crank handle. As with anything you attempt to do around old machinery , alway's think of SAFETY. I suppose there could be a kick back, if your hand is placed properly on the crank handle, the most it could do would pull back from your hand. Many times the advice received from some of the members that post on this board is the danger for hand cranking, it can happen, although it usually doesn't. I have a Super A and most times just use the hand crank, although I have had all my INT. starters rebuilt. Cheers, Murray

I always contend that's why there are bank barns. Park at the top of the bank, let her roll and pop the clutch.
