Farmall H won't Start

Hello all,

My 1944 H with magneto ignition wouldn"t start for me last week. I narrowed it down to the magneto wasn"t giving any spark. When I pulled it off I tested it on my bench by putting a spark plug right to the coil wire, and was getting a rather irregular spark. So I got another good mag off the shelf, put a tune up kit into it and had good spark when I bench tested that one. I reinstalled and timed up the second mag and when I hit the starter it took right off. After cleaning up the driveway I let it run for a bit to help charge the battery, and all of a sudden it quit again. It refired once and ran for another 10 minutes or so and then it stopped again and wouldn"t restart. I checked the mag and sure enough, no spark again. I am kinda stumped now and am hoping someone here can be of assistance. Thank you.

sounds like the ground wire from the pull start switch is grounded to me. take the wire off the magneto off and it should start

Thank you for the reply. I had already disconnected the switch on the first mag and hadn't hooked it back up yet. Is there anything else that could be grounding out the mag? I didn't see anything obvious.

This may not be it at all but, I had a mag act a lot like that one time and it turned out that the fiber washer thing where I think the wire comes out from the side of the mag was bad and somehow grounding out. Oh heck thats been years ago I cant for sure even remember where it is in the mag. I have not messed with one in a long time.

I'll almost bet your points have slipped on you so they are no longer opening as they should. Seen that many times when new points are installed

Check the easy things first like the point gap at .013" and make sure the points are opening and closing. If that looks ok replace the condenser.

If there's still no fire you may have a weak coil or the magnets in the mag are weak. Hal
