a friend has a farmall H with magneto. he believes that the points need cleaning/replacing. i looked at the tractor and it appears that mag. must be removed to service points.

You don't have to remove the magneto to replace the points. Just be sure you take the three screw plate off and not the little two screw plate. Also, note the position of rotor for reinstallation. Me, personally, I take the magneto off. Too darn hard to properly align the points if they don't match up right with magneto on tractor. Gap is critical also at .013.

took top off mag. coil is on top. ??? coil has to come out to get to points. do not remember a plate to remove.

You are under the wrong cap. Put the coil cap back on and take the distributor cap off, the one with the wires running to your spark plugs. The rotor is under there, then under the rotor is your dust cover, then under the dust cover is your points.

You will need the mag off to replace the condenser. Points are behind those 3 screws after the 5 nipple cap & rotor is off.

Mags in this series have small gears and a plate between the rotor and points, Just trying to be accurate. Jim

easy to pull the mag just remove rite after it trips and then check the rotor position so when you reinstall have the rotor in the same position and you will be fine i do it all the time it will be much easier to install points just like other post said DO NOT remove the front plate with the TWO screws as that cover is where the rotor is timed at. The Three screws removes the cover for the points. You can turn the mag backwards easy to set points just have the rotor pointing at the same position when you removed it to reinstall.
