Super M LP?

About a month ago a friend of mine told me his brother in law was going to clean up some junk on a farm he had bought off an elderly couple. My friend told me about the tractor that was going to the scrap yard. We drove over to look at it and it turned out to be a 1954 Super M LP with a wide front and the motor was loose. I asked the man what he would take for it cash and I would haul it away. He said it should be worth over $400.00 because he had already hauled off 2 other tractors but if he did not have to mess with it he would take $ 375.00.I went and hunted down the old codger at Dycusburg Ky, everyone talks about and asked if he could save it! The man said most likely but not as a LP. I went back for the tractor and hauled to the Rolling Acres Shop, the old codger looked and said let me see what I can do if I find a real problem I will call you! He called Saturday and said it was done and the bill was $631.00. I went to pick it up and he had change it over to gas and changed all the sheet metal with used parts, tuned the engine and repaired a rear rim. The tractor looks good and runs good! Today we were talking about it at the coffee shop and one of the locals said that I just wasted my money it will not run long it will burn holes in the pistons and run hot and a 1954 Super M is only worth about$ 2000.00 and I have about $ 1080.00 in mine and it still needs a paint job! Is that true because I have found a 400Lp setting in the weeds for $500.00 and I was going to have it changed over to sell? What do you think? Did I waste my money? Should I leave the 400 in the weeds?

either you are trying to make everyone nervous or you don't get around much. a super m lp with a '54 serial number should sell real easy. since it is now not original according to the serial number it is not worth as much. the 400lp might have a 364586 head which would be worth more than the $500 asking price. the super m ex lp tractor won't burn holes in the pistons. it would have the same head as a gas tractor and 5000' pistons which aren't any higher compression than the domed pistons that 99% of them have in them now.

If its tuned correct to burn gas there should be no problem. Some 400, 450 and others are running just as much compression on gas as the SM LP engine will have unless its been increased from regular rebuild parts.
True 54 SM LP is probably worth more than what you have now though.

If it was factory LP you have just decreased the value, I would not buy one that has had a major change.

J Hook, YOU asked!! H3LL Yes you wasted your $$$$!!!
A loose engine on factory LP First of get it to run on LP, There are many way to keep it running on LP!!
I would Not have changed to gasoline At all. Unless it was absolutely necessary. Here in Texas where LP ruled for many, many yrs, IMO you decreased the value of you tractor. Dont spend the money to convert the 400LP till you have exausted all avenues of operating it on LP. You gave away all the extra parts off the tractor you just converted. Bet you didn't even bring them home!
I pulled a 1966, IH 656 LP out of the weeds 2 summers ago. Really nice little tractor, #2 cylinder pumps a little oil, other than that rock solid. OBTW Bet you have never seen a 656 LP! Currently I know of 7 in the State of Texas!!! Dont make a mistake till you have done due diligence!

The SMTA-LP is a highly sought-after tractor The 400-LP is a more refined SMTA-LP. So Do Not make a BIG mistake by ripping the LP off and not even trying to get the LP to work. 400 gas are nothing spectacular the LP is more unique. Hope this helps. jas

It will run fine on gasoline but was worth more as a factory LP tractor. Not a fortune more but more nonetheless. Same with the 400.
The "old codger" just made off with a good LP manifold, carb and regulator!

Buy and sell the 400 LP as is.
