Farmall Gray

Here"s a weird question. I am painting a restore job on a 1941 Farmall H and I ordered IH Farmall Gray from Tisco for the rims. I sprayed it on and it is rather dark. My assumption it is a gray used on older Farmalls when they were gray. My question, "Does this bother a lot of Farmall enthusiasts that the rims are a dark Farmall Gray instead of an aluminum/silver or can I just leave it?" Just looking for opinions. Ultimately it is up to personal preference and interpretation. The tractor will be raffled off this summer if you were wondering. That is why I am asking because the goal is to sell raffle tickets. Just seeing if it is a big deal that"s all. Thanks!

The original rims, if they were grey were actually galvanized. My 1941 W-4 has red painted rims as were the early Farmall H and Farmall M, no trace of galvanizing. I thought that the galvanizing came in about 1943

You guys are right and I agree. Due to time and budget, I think I'll go find some standard issue silver instead special ordering aluminum paint. The silver just looks so much better on those rims. Thanks.

Special order?? Just about ANY farm supply or other hardware store has aluminum paint right on the shelf. Pints, quarts, gallons, or aerosol cans.

I know. I've been using that Tisco brand from Fleet Farm here
in Wisconisn and that they don't stock on the shelves. I'll just
use a different brand. But yes you are right you can easily find
it.

Matt, I have painted a lot of H and M's over the years. I always used Aluminum available at CIH Dealer that comes in quarts or spray can

I always used quart and brush. No overspray on tires. Just jack up wheel, rotate and brush, goes quickly and looks good.

Guess any aluminum paint would work especially TISCO as theirs is made by Valspar who I thinks is supplier for CIH.

Dealer supplied is good and they know what you need. Was in line when I bought but that has been awhile.

The good news is the tires are off so I can quick spray it on. Thanks for the advice. Fleet Farm carries Valspar s ill go there over the weekend. If not, there is an ICH dealer near by as well. Thanks again.

For a tractor I was going to raffle or sell: I would simply use the silver aluminum paint that you can find literally anywhere. As it will look the closest to what is generally accepted.

That said, I do not like how the silver aluminum paint wears at all and especially how it leaves your hand dirty if you touch it. For my tractors that I plan to keep and use for 30 years or more then I am now using plain ole Rustoleum stops rust "Pewter Gray". No it is not a perfect match but it is much more durable finish and a close enough match for my ole Farmall junkers. A silver argent rim color would likely be an even closer match but I can not find any at any of the cheap discount store prices (athough I have found it at higher prices at specialty places), but none of the silver rim paint has the "stops rust" stuff that I typically need as well.

So Rustoleum Pewter Gray it is for me - cheap, stops rust, durable, and close enough match for me.
