starter trouble 300 U

Morning all,
Today the starter is gone. It spins over fine but does not throw out the gear to engage the flywheel.
Sounds like this mounted and when removed and bench tested with jumper cables, it is clearly NOT throwing the gear out.
This is the "Bendix" gear correct? Any quick fix out there ? A user rebuild kit?
Bench test with battery cable is red and black to battery, other black to mounting flange on starter and the red (HOT)is touched to the stud going into the starter.
Did I miss anything?
Thanks to all in advance
dave

The starter drive/bendex do fail from time to time. You should be able to get a replacement from NAPA.Check out these guys right here YT.They have alot of parts available.

You should be able to with your fingers spin the gear out. If you can not do that pretty easy it maybe gummed up with oil and grease ans dirt. The starter drive (bendex) need to be good and clean and free of grease and oil. And yes they do go bad and they can be fun to replace due to having to mess with the brushes. If you replace the bendex your better off doing the bushings and brushes all at the same time

If when tested the starter reacted radically and tried to jump off the table with torque reaction, the drive is bad. If it just spins up to some speed with modest non threataning action. the starter needs repair. They are pretty violent. Jim
