300 Utility Rear PTO question

I am in the process of installing the platform or cover over all the gears from recently installing new axle bearings. I reinstalled the rear pto and want to make sure everything is correct before I install the top.

My question is should I be able to turn the pto shaft? right now I cannot turn the shaft.

Am I ok or have I done something wrong?

Thanks in advance

Do you have IPTO or transmission driven? I am not familiar with the
Utility but on a RC the IPTO can only be turned by hand when the
lever is in the middle of it's range, and maybe not even then unless
you find the right spot. The trans drive PTO should be able to turn
if it is not turned on, which means engaged to the countershaft. If
it is then the engine is keeping it from turning over.

Probably OK. The PTO has two bands, one is a brake, the other a drive.
If not connected to the control levers, they do not turn well. Find Janicholson 300 PTO in the archives to give it an adjustment when installed. Jim

OK I will check it out. I did connect the pto engaging arm just to see if it made any difference and it still does not turn when engaged or not.

It currently will not turn at all. I just don't want to put top on and have a problem when I am done.

They are stiff and can be turned if the control is moved near its central position if you use a pipe wrench, do not expect to move it by hand. The IPTO is accessible from the back, the trans top makes no difference to remove replace. Jim

Thank you - I searched archives and found your adjustment guide. I will make adjustments in the next couple nights hopefully.

One last question (for now anyway) - I was thinking before I took it off the tractor I could turn it by hand. Did I do something when removing? what caused it to get out of adjustment or did it?

Thanks

They are tough. Just being out of the tractor can and will let the bands hang at an angle, or be without lube from sitting. It will be OK when put together. One critical element is to have no lost motion in the linkage. Any looseness will cause the lever to fail to move the internal linkage as needed. Jim

Usual setup is an IPTO It has Bands and gears inside it as well as shifting linkages. not a simple dog clutch shaft. Jim

what do you mean by IPTO - Independent PTO? either way, your instructions in the post are good for my adjustments - correct?

THere are two different PTO systems that were offered on that tractor. One is a transmission driven PTO. it looks just like the ones on a farmall H or M. It always stops when the clutch is pushed in. It has an actuating rod or lever system that pulls up on a small lever on the external part of the drive.
The IPTO is independent. It is hefty and has the ability to stay in operation with the clutch pushed down. The lever is on the right side and has a pivot at the top of the right axle. the handle has a button that is pushed down to release it from "stopped" (down) to "operate" (up) position. it locks in either position, and should be in one or the other unless the lever is moving from one to the other. My adjustment is for the IPTO. the other Trans driven PTO has no external latching system. Jim

Jim,

Thanks - I learned something. I did not know they offered it in both on the 300U. I am well aware of the transmission driven. When I was young, I many a time have been almost pushed thru a fence by not stopping in time and the bush hog push our H.

I hope to make the adjustments tonight or tomorrow night.

Stay tuned!
