Hydraulic issues 404

I recently purchased a 1963 Farmall 404 and have a few issues I am working on. My main issue is I removed the hydraulic filter canister to discover all the internal parts are missing, no filters, mesh screen, valve, seals, and springs. I would like to find a source for purchasing these parts but I have only been able to get the paper element filter. I read where someone had the same issue and he came up with a spacer (radiator hose) that was installed to keep the filter in place. Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated, especially a source for purchasing or even fabricating these pieces. Another interesting thing was I drained the hydraulic fluid from the three drain sources and came up with approximately 14 gallons of fluid. And yes, I have a 3 point and power steering. Any comments on the 14 gallons verse the 7 the manual quotes? Thanks!!

I wish you luck in your search for parts. The 404 is one of the more rare tractors so finding one in a salvage yard with the parts you need is going to be a tough row to hoe.

One thing that might help is that AFAIK, the 240 is basically the same tractor.

As for the hydraulic fluid volume, there should be a level check plug that indicates when it is full. You keep putting in fluid until it starts to run out the level check plug. Whatever it takes to do that is what it takes.

Was the old oil milky? it may have had a lot of water mixed in.

Does anyone know why I would have at least 12-14 gallons of oil in the hydraulic system ? I do have a dual range but I am still not sure why there would be so much oil. I would think if it were so overfull it would have been puking oil. I have managed to find another discussion from a guy having a similar issue but I could not find out what he found. Please help if you can. At this point I may start filling and see what happens.

404 hydraulic system is not like a 240. It has a filter mounted behind the pump. Transmission and differential is a common reservoir and should hold 7 gal. There should be a "level plug" on the right rear back of the axle housing and fill thru the plug in the top cover of the transmission. If the capacity is any different with the dual range, you would still fill to the level plug. Farmall and International (Utility) 404 and industrial 2404 should be the same if you are looking for parts from a salvage yard. I don't know if any other models have the same filter. IH may not carry parts any more, but they should show the part numbers and maybe can tell you if there are other models with the same filter parts.
Too bad the younger generation of parts guys don't usually know what interchanges, they just know how to look it up on a computer.

Dual range?

Like a TA?

If your "404" has a TA, then it's not a 404. It's a 504, and that would explain why you have 14 gallons of hydraulic oil.

Not a TA, a "dual range" shifter between the clutch and transmission in the torque tube, available on the 404. There is also a "reverser" that is an option and fits in the same space and either is bolted to the front of the transmission housing.
If you have an IH-201 I&T manual, it's shown on p. 29.
It still should only have 7 gallons of fluid... no reason it should have had 14... sounds like someone added 7 gallons without draining the original 7 gallons .

I kinda thought so.

Still, I like to make sure all bases are covered. Stranger things have happened.
