super c carb adjustment

I've been searching the web to find the right way to set the carb on my super c .I have a bit of a lean condition and can't get it out.I'm having to run the choke about half on

There is none. The float level is important, but you likely have a piece of trash in the main jet, or its passages. Jim

The screw is Idle adjust not high speed. The turn cock allows draining the carb (and checking flow from the tank). The float is set at the height specified (I don't have it for that carb, it is in the book or someone will post it here) To do it one takes off the carb and measures it upside down with the bowl off. Another way is to use a clear plastic hose on a barbed fitting in place of the drain cock. The hose is held up past the side of the carb and the level is determined from the level of gas in the tube. if tractor has sat for a bit, probably trash in fuel line. do you have an add on filter? if so remove it and replace with fuel line. there is a drain in bottom of carb., remove it and observe fuel flow. should have stream about the size of a pencil. if you have good flow, carb is problem; if not, remove settling bowl again observe fuel flow. if no good flow, remove the cut-off valve, fuel should run out really good.

No adjusstment on the carb for load. If you are having to run with the choke on, you either have a fuel obstruction (as others said) or you have an air leak in the intake manifold between the carb and the engine intakes. Check for a crack or hole in the manifold or a bad manifold gasket.

there is a drain on carb. open it, you should have flow the size of a pencil. if you do, it is the carb, if not you have trash, rust etc, in the lines.

turn cock on bowl, either turns on fuel or stops it; depending on which way it is sitting. maybe, open turn cock a bit.

Does engine idle ok with no choke. If you need choke at low idle speed you may very well have an air leak. To check for air leak you can use several methods. Some safer than others. A propane torch with no flame run around all gasket surfaces at carb mount and manifold to head. Or something like a carburetor cleaner or penetrating oil will also work. There have been several C model and Super C tractors that seem to run too lean around here. Because the main jet is not adjustable we drill them out just a tad at a time. Requires wire gauge drill bits. Most run fine under a light load but cannot sustain a heavy load without sputtering and dieing. Loaned my drill bits to a friend who has been fighting his C for years when mowing up hill with it. He drilled it out a little, helped, drilled a little more and never ran so good. I'm not saying the first thing you do is grab a drill bit, just after checking out other possibilities. It happens a lot with newer gasoline blends.

You may have a blockage at the outlet from the tank. Tank liner can plug the hole and not let enough gas through.
Take a good flash light and look down in the tank, you should be able to see the outlet.

You will get a good flow until the carb is empty, then it can only flow as fast as the needle & seat lets it through. And that will not be the size of a pencil.
