1586 vs 1086

Im wondering if anybody knows if the 1086 is a better tractor than the 1586. We had a 1586 and had nothing but problems with the trans/final drive, and there was no comfortable working gear. it was either too fast or too slow. Ive been thinking of purchasing a 1086 because they had a different transmission, but is the 1086 better built far as rear end?

Had a 1566 and a 1086 the 15 had lots of power but did not like the 3 speed trans poor gearing speeds.About the only difference was the planetary drive on the 15 and a 436cid motor. The 1086 has plenty of power but hated the ride.

Most likely your 1586 problems were due to a previous owner having twisted the smoke screw in until it broke off, then running it hard and fast for years and years.

A 1086 will have similar reliability problems if treated the same way. You can get close to 200HP out of a turboed 414 pretty easy, and that will tear a 10's rear end up given enough time.

Unfortunately you always can't tell how bad a tractor has been beat just by looking at it. Even just a good steam cleaning can hide a lot of sins.

unfortunately that's what happened to me, a good cleaning fooled me. but im just pulling a 12ft discbine and round baler. the 1586 was overkill for that type of work. I think the 1086's have a 4 speed that's got a better reputation but these are 1970's era machines and only God knows what they've been through

10s are good tractors. There are a bazillion out there still working reliably.Yes they can be jucied to 200Hp.And yes,as expected, they will have some problems with that many ponies.Keep er down to 140 or so,no problems.

A lot of those final drive issues were related to the engine being turned up to 200 hp and then seeing lots of hard use.

But then a lot of 1086s saw the same abuse.

I have owned both of these tractors, they were both good tractors, but almost all of the 1586's were turned up too high to last long without problems.

We upgraded the 856 to a 1086. I thought I had died and gone to heaven. We had good luck with ours but it had been well cared for. Get the 10 series.

The 1086 tractor is one of the best buys as good ones bring around $10K plus. The 1586s just got a reputation for reliability problems but I know of one that has had minimal problems and has around 10K hours and has been used hard.

We had a 1586 and a 1566 - both were run (hard) well past 12K hours back in the 80s before they were traded. They were turned up to the 180 hp range and were pretty ragged out when they went down the road. For some reason I remember the 1566 being mechanically more reliable - but that could have been the operators too.

I think some of you are confusing the 1586 with the 1486. It was the 1486 that had all the rear end problems. 1586 was totally different rear end and was quite reliable. We had one and had no problems.
