I bought a 1936 International c-30 stake truck with no title(out of state and no title required in Maine)now In Va I can't get it licensed. Does anyone know where there might be some sort of Vin number. I located an motor number on the upper front left side of the block on a small machined flat. DMV isn't willing to go with this and Maine's records don't go back to the date of the license plate currently on the truck(1990).Thanks

Did they even have titles in 1936?? My brother built a 1931 Model A out of parts. He got a historic plate through the state of Missouri, but then that was 25 years ago.

Good luck, Gene

In Iowa you can get a. Bonded title,it's secured with a bond in case it's stolen etc. after a period of time you are issued a clear title. You might check to see if your state has something similar. Don't know about IH trucks but old fords have the vin stamped on top of the frame just ahead of the steering box.

They didn"t even know about titles back then. I would do some checking as to your states rules with some one who has expertise in it. I have run into problems trying to register vehicles because the clerk didn"t have a clue about the laws. You may have to get a good lawyer.

1936 IHC C-1 has number stamped on the frame, drivers side, behind front wheel. There's also a plate on the dash. In the state of Arizona, we applied for and got an abandoned title, though based on what little history we know, it is possible its been in Az since the '30's.
Part we don't fully understand- per Wisconsin History Society records, it is a 1936, but Az issued a tile calling it a 1941. Need to redo breaks so it sits, a someday project.

See link for Wisconsin History Society SN records. What you see is what they have for trucks of that vintage.

Final suggestion, you need to talk to someone who has dealt with Va DMV. Look for car clubs for Va, I'd think their would be a Ford A and a Ford T club for sure, so those would be good starting points, as I'd also think you are not the first and probably won't be the last in Va to get your self in such a situation with an old car.

A C series should have a large ID tag riveted on the splash apron above the running board behind the passenger fender. the chassis number is what you will use. I live in Iowa and get bonded titles here quite a lot and did one for my old 1933 B4 IHC truck. C series were very similar to the A and B series and that's where the tag is located

You'll probably need to use a wire brush on the left frame rail just behind the left front wheel...and then maybe even spritz some oil on it, to make the numbers stand out better. Some were stamped lightly; others were stamped a little better. But at least through the 1950's, IH stamped the chassis number onto the frame...and that's what you'll need to get a title.

In the Harvester Highlights Magazine, the quarterly publication of the national IHCC organization, there is a listing of the various Technical Committees along with contact information. For 1923-1940 IHC trucks that person is Marty Mersch in Illinois. His contact info by phone is noted as seven-seven-three, four-nine-zero, nine-seven-four-seven and email at martymersch6 at Comcast dot net. Along with the other responses you have received I believe he can provide additional information to assist you, Hal.

The State police should have all the info you will need to provide registration for any vehicle purchased outside the state.

After you have located & made legible the vin number on the frame, contact the State police & see what their policy is on having your vin verified & certified by a Trooper.

After they have verified the vin, you can then take the form to the License Bureau and apply for a lost, out-of-state, or antique vehicle registration.

I am unsure of your state's policies, but this was the requirements for the two states I have resided.

I have a 1940 DS30. The Vin Number is on the side of the engine housing area, under the left side Hood, (nead the driver"s door hinge) The same plate that lists the model, year, weights etc. Mine only has a 4 digit vin number. Wasn"t a problem in MT, but it did throw off their computer for a bit.
