301 gas engine in a farmall 706?

after spending a fortune on the D282 engine in this tractor something went bang in the engine. I am wondering if anyone out there has put a combine 301 gas in a 706D before? And can tell me mechanically not electrical what to expect. I can pick up a gas engine pretty cheap. Its a winter chore tractor mostly with a 50 or so round bales rolled up per year.

Put a D301 from a 715 combine in a 460 utility, brother still has it. The combine timing cover assembly must be replaced with tractor cover assembly, gas and diesel covers will not interchange. Can you find what happened to your engine?

Diesel to gas on these tractors is pretty involved, as you need a bunch of parts to make it work, and they're not all easy to find.

1. Frame rails are different.
2. Front and rear engine mounts are different.
3. Flywheel/clutch/pressure plate is different.
4. Radiator is different.

That's just the major parts. Doesn't include all the bolts and nuts and hoses and rods and tubes and fittings.

A piece of cake with the gas front timeing plate, air cleaner not sure on the radiator.Done a couple 460 and 560 but on my 706 it will get a 400 series engine.

I don't know if you're near cotton country, but a 600 series IH Cotton Picker engine is also a candidate-most were diesel and they are plentiful in the Deep South. The engines were 301 cubes for gas and 310 for diesel. Just sayin'.

If the 600 cotton pickers had a D310 German Diesel, he'll have the same problem as with converting to gas.

Everything between the front bolster and the bell housing is different from the D282 to the D310. They're completely different engines.

Finding D310 parts is more difficult than finding the gas parts.

If you want a real parts-scrounging challenge, try putting a D312 or D360 American diesel in a 706.

The C263, C291, C301, and D282 are virtually the same block. You'll need the correct tractor timing cover. There's little details to make it happen, but this should be one of the easiest powerplant transplants out there. Any other diesel engine and you'll be hunting for sheet metal and frame rails along with the engine attachments.
My statements are based on years of forum reading and casual browsing of parts and service manuals. Check out the archives here and some other IH sites and get some ideas.

good luck

You can reuse the flywheel and starter from the diesel on the gas engine. The starter will be a bit of an overkill but it will work fine.

we are slow but finally got the engine taken down. The number 5 exhaust valve broke off about a 1/4" above the head and pounded a new hole in the head. water got in all the cylinders and stained the new cylinders not hurt by the destruction.
