I just acquired a super a with no tag any other way to identify year? It has no water pump and a carter carb. any help would be appreciated

The engine serial number is stamped into a flat section on the block just below the front spark plug. It will not be the same number as the tractor serial number but should not be too different

Also look at the type of front end it has....tie rods vs. ball joints. The ball joints were the 1947 - mid 1951 models (around S/N 318,xxx).

There are casting codes on each large cast part that the factory had to cast (ie, transmission, torque tube (bellhousing), engine block, head, final drives, front bolster, etc. ). Those letter/number combos will provide you when the part was cast at the factory and that will tell you the approximate year of the tractor. It will also tell you if someone had replaced parts from another tractor over the years (not likely they would go to the trouble to match from same year parts tractor). Research the Casting Codes for Farmall Tractors and you'll see how to read them and what to look for.
