300U axle hubs

I had to replace the axle bearings on the right side, I have since replaced both sides. I am now complete and installing the hubs. I had to actually beat the right side on with a sledge. I had greased up both hub splines and axle splines and still was a job getting on. The right side is back together and all turn good, but I don't think this is correct.

Am I doing something wrong? is there a trick to getting the hub started and back on easily?

The only thing I can figure is that the splines took a liking to the ones they were running with and if it is in a different set of splines, it might have had issues. Jim
