Hey guys! Picked up this 1940 H at an auction
yesterday. Actually paid $600 but I already have the
3pt hitch sold off of it for $400. Now I have go
decide if I"m going to keep the tractor or sell it
and make some money. I"m sure its not too hard to
figure out what I want vs what my wife wants! Lol.
Either way I like the paint, sheet metal is perfect,
rear cutoffs were done very nicely and rear tires
are in great shape. It does have electric start, but
no lights or generator or anything, could it have
come from the factory like that being such an early
model? I"m guessing so.

IAtractorKid; I 'tink' you did good; lots of value in those rear tires alone. From your post you have an XYL to deal with but, I see WAY lotsa' room in the shed...you better get your H a stable mate.

No. Either the starter was added or the generator removed.

Nice buy - especially so with the 3pt hitch.

FWIW: I have both a Farmall h and a Farmall M. I am actually considering removing the light bar from them both and relocating the lights somewhere else. With that bar out of the way I think I can weld up some steps and make the tractor mountable from in front of the wheels similar to how one mounts most modern tractors (instead of climbing dangerously up the rear which is much more difficult especially if they have 3 pt hitch on them which mine do).

Granted I know this will not be original and the original police will have a fit, but who cares. As your purchase proves, these tractors are not worth all that much anyway (although they should sell for much more than they do). Besides anything I weld up will merely bolt onto the tractor so it could easily be removed and the tractor put back to original if desired. I hope to get this done next year sometime as I think it will make the tractors much safer to climb aboard. (especially if the wife drives the tractor sometimes.....)

(quoted from post at 16:17:43 11/17/13) Not hard to make some nice steps to get on from the rear

Agreed with no 3pt hitch. Heck no steps are even needed as the U-shape drawbar works quite well for a step if you are content to mount from the rear again assuming no 3 pt.

Not so easy though when a 3 point hitch kit has been added , you move the wheels in to a desired narrower width, plus have fenders installed too. What I am able to navigate now in my mid-40's will likely diminish as I age - and my wife already struggles now due to being shorter.

But as a guy ages, gets heavier, a little less stable on his feet, and your knees begin deteriorating, you start thinking of devices to build that would make mounting an H or M just a wee bit easier and safer. In my younger days, more than once I slipped off that horseshoe drawbar when it was raining and my shoes were covered in mud. Usually did a number on my shins in the process. I am quite a bit less nimble now, and I don't heal up nearly as quick.

If I hadn't been standing around talking you wouldn't have gotten that H so cheap

that was probably the only deal of the day. other than the W-6 my friend bought

You were there? Wish I would have known so we could
have met! I seriously considered the M right beside
this H as it sold right around $700 and it had a 3pt
too.

Wow that's cheap too - especially with 3 point.

Did they start either your h or the M at the sale or were they bought as-is, not running, condition unknown?

Owner of the tractors was there and gave a little
description of each; I know him personally too. They
didn't start any of the tractors.
