Need advice on fast hitch sickle mower

I had a good friend give me to old IH sickle mowers for parts so I could make some repairs and replace some broken parts on my fast hitch mower. The metal piece that bolts to the lower pulley then to the pittman arm was messed up so I was taking it off when I discovered the bottom pulley will slide in and out about two inches on the shaft. I am guessing that this is not right. Never having had one of these apart is that pulley supposed to have a set screw or a key in it somewhere? With my old eyes and poor light combined with the 60 years of dirt and grease I couldn’t tell. Thank you for any help and a big thank you to Sean for the parts mowers.

You probably already thought of this, but have you looked at the parts mowers to see if they do the same thing?

paul shuler"]; I like your sickle bar mower guard - the square mesh. I just cringe at the sight of cardboard covering a sickle bar when same is on display at a tractor show. Folks SHOULD know 'nuph' not to stick their fingers in where it is sharp. Good luck w/your project.

I tried to last night but they where out in the dark and had a lot of old grease and dirt on that area. So I could'nt tell much about them in the dark with a flash light. I may have to clean them up a bit. It may be easier to dismantle mine farther and see what I find.

Thanks AL, I have a little helper that loves to be with paw paw in the barn. It keeps her little fingers out of the mower and my big dumb fingers out also.

Paul: I have the same mower in pieces and put away. I assuer you that the lower pully dose NOT and is NOT supposed to slide on the shaft. I have to dig it out & look at it more closely to be certain how it is held but I know that it is fixed in position.

Paul, It appears you have a 21P mower and in my parts catalog for fast hitch implements for a Super C tractor I have some good details as to how everything goes together. It appears there is a tapered pin that holds the pulley on the shaft which might be missing on your mower. You should be able to see a slot on the back end of the shaft to accommodate the tapered pin. There are tapered roller bearings in two places on the shaft along with a bushing inside the housing which the shaft goes through where the bearings are located. I would be happy to mail you some copies of that portion of the catalog if it would help with your assessment and repair of your mower. The pin part no. in my catalog of the 1950's is Q441. Send your USPS address to which the copies should be sent as I have my email open for your response if desired, Hal.
P.S. Too bad Al L. in Wisc doesn't live closer to us as he would be a nice addition to us Missouri Farmall guys-I met him a few years ago when the RPRU was in Albert Lea, Minnesota.

I think the keyway in the shaft is visible in the second picture.

Jim, I thought I could make it out as well but didn't know if Paul knew what he was really looking for.
Missed you at the RPRU this past summer as I had to stay home and make those square hay bales so my cattle would have something to eat this winter. The drought the prior year kept the crop down a lot and didn't get any extra put away so had to get everything filled up again.
Did another load of watermelons arrive from our good friend in Louisiana like the prior RPRU in Du Quoin - if so I hope you got a little of my share, Hal.

I too see what your talking about. I didn’t see that last night. The flash on the phone lit things up way better than what I could see with my eye. I wear tri focals now and if I wear them barn I get oil crap all over them but if I don’t I am working in brail. When I put lights in my barn I thought it was as bright as the sun and now it seems like I can’t ever get enough light. I remember my dad saying the same thing back in the day.
