I ordered a set of AL386 to replace the old DC16. The hex on the AL386 is shorter than the DC16. The plug is so big that I can not get the socket on the hex to tighten. What is the trick?

Try a 3/8 drive deep well socket instead of the 1/2 drive you are likely using. The 7/8 socket required is a bit of an oddball and will probably be hard to find in a thin wall spark plug design. You can probably go to sears and get the 3/8 drive 7/8 socket in a deep well version and I think it will be a thinner wall than the 1/2 drive. I had similar problem once and solved it by getting a 3/8 drive socket.

Our forefathers from the WWII era won"t like this, but NGK AB6 plugs solve the hex interference issue. The plugs have a 3/4 inch hex with the correct 18mm thread.
