A friend of mine has a MTA that has always ran and operated good. Last week he loaded it up to take to a show and when he went to unload it it would not start unless the clutch was depress and when started it will not move and dies when the clutch is released. I don't know much about these but it sounds like it is stuck between gears a broken gear tooth in the gears. He thinks it might be the TA or the PTO. He has the top of the transmission off and says everything looks OK but he isn't sure what to look for. I am going over this weekend to look at it and if you have any pointers as to what to look for I would appreciate hearing them

These IH 5-speed transmissions occasionally get stuck in 2 gears
at once. There are many threads on here about how to fix it.

He should have pulled the shifter out before removing the top cover to make sure the shift fork slots had a least 2 in line. 2 out of line is lookup. If it has IPTO that's not the problem. Engine wouldn't turn with clutch in or out if it was locked.
Should be able to jack wheels, move sliding gears by hand, turn engine by hand or wheels with gears engaged and clutch released, or also check in neutral and watch for any problem.

Don't over look the TA. Some times the over running clutch locks up the carrier solid and then the transmission shaft will not turn unless the TA lever is pulled. If the TA has not been working lately in low range he may have not even tried pulling the lever. I actually doubt he may have not tried this but one never knows.
