New starter on 140 won't turn over.

I have bought a new starter for my 1960 140. The teeth on the old one were pretty much toast. I took the switch off the old starter and put it on the new starter, pressed the push button switch and nothing happened(the starter was not mounted yet). I tried mounting the starter to see if it needed to be grounded but still nothing. I tried remounting the switch to the old starter after a few tries the starter turned over(again not mounted to the tractor). The starter was the original 6v while the rest of the tractor had been converted to 12v. The new starter is also a 6v. I"ve sanded down the contacts in the starter switch and it seems like it should make good contact.
I"m not real sure were to go from here.
any thoughts

well, the quickest bench test you can do requires a battery and a set of jumper cables. Mount the starter in a vice, and clip one lead to the vice. Take the other lead, and with the starter switch removed touch it to the post. it will either run or it won't. Now, that won't diag all things, but it is the first test I run with an unknown condition starter.

Well from the sounds of it you are not completing a circuit so that would explain why it does nothing. It has to have a good ground to complete the circuit. Meaning you have to mount it or run a jumper to ground it.

I just bench tested the new starter and nothing happened. I took the switch off and tried touching the positive to the contact on the new starter and nothing happened. I did the same test on the old starter and it worked.
Bad starter I guess. It's brand new(or rebuilt) to.

I almost never walk out of a parts store with out having them test starters and alternators that way I know that they work before driving home with them. Seen to many that where bad right out of the box

Sounds like all you needed was a new drive for your old starter. Take it to a starter repair shop and have them put in a new drive. Return the new one that does not work.

If you can't take a jumper cable, clamp the - to an ear on the starter, and touch the + to the terminal/lug, and have the starter spin, it's no good.

If your old starter spins over fine, just replace the drive.
