Super A + Howard rotovator?

I have the SA, and there is a Howard rotovator coming up at auction soon that I might like to pick up if the price is right.

I've seen Uncle Henry's pictures of a C with a rotovator, and there was some mention of a "reduction gear" making it work better. Could someone explain? Is it a lower first gear kit for the tractor?

TIA

There was a hydralic creeper attatchment for those
tractors that used the pto.But they are rare and
since you need the pto,it wouldn't work anyway. As
said in the past, those little nonlive pto tractors
just dont work with rototillers. The 'tall' first
gear, nonlive pto and low horspower are not
compatable for a tiller. If you can find a tiller
with its own engine,thatwould work.

There was one for the Cub it bolted where the final was fastened to the tranny. Did not fit the SA. But the SA did have a hy drive fastend to the PTO and hooked to the live pump on the SA. Your gears will run to fast of ground speed for the tiller to work good several passes will need to be made.

Thanks, DeltaRed and Gene. I knew about the HydroCreeper attachment (found it in the parts book years ago), but even if I could find one to install, it wouldn't be of much use if tying up the PTO.

I did some more info digging and went back to look at the pictures Uncle Henry posted http://forums.yesterdaystractors.com/viewtopic.php?p=6304411&highlight=#6304411 , and it looks like a Cub, not a C as I had first thought. How ironic that the tiny HP Cub could be fitted to use the tiller with the "Howard Despeeders" (reduction gears), and it's bigger brother could not. While a small tiller coupled with the handiness of the SA would be a boon, I guess I'll just keep my eye out for a bigger tiller to go with our bigger tractor. At least until I get my dream project SA going...

They did make one for the Super A, which was I believe the same size as the cub, but did not require the speed reducer that lowered the ground speed. The cub was an L28 and the Super A model was S28. Here is a picture of the one for a super A. Note, the square gear box for the pto. Since a cub pto turns in the opposite direction and at engine rpm, it had a round gear box.

and a picture of mine for a cub I had just refurbished.

I may be missing something here, but wouldn't anything that slowed the ground travel also slow the pto on a tractor that does not have live pto? It would defeat the purpose. Even with live pto, you would have to ride the clutch to slow the ground speed.

If you are slowing the input shaft yes, but the Howard Despeeder was a a housing with a planetary drive gear that could be shifted in and out of gear, and installed between a final drive and the transmission. When it was engaged the ground speed was cut in half approximately, but it really gave the differential a work out, much as if you were driving in a tight circle all the time. Here is a picture of one on my cub. Note, it widened the tractor by about 5 inches so spacers were required for attaching the drawbar, or any rear mount implements.
