I need a visual on the IH 240 with the front and side sheet metal connections and thier brackets. We are restoring one and all the sheet metal was gone. We have the sheet metal but cannot figure out the proper way to secure them to the tractor

GOOGLE "IH 240" and click on "images".

Here's a link to the parts catalog... I don't know if the parts breakdown drawings will help?
240 parts

You need to state which model you are interested in as the row crop Farmall model and utility International model are somewhat different. I am working on a narrow front Farmall 240 and have found the IHC TC-53B Parts Catalog most beneficial. What areas are you specifically having issues with? It is fairly straight forward except for the front with the grille and radiator supports tying in with the fan housing and radiator side baffles.
Where are you located as I'm in south central Missouri? Best of luck in your restoration, Hal.

I can't help very much on the utility model 240 as when I disassembled my row crop 240 (the lights are mounted much farther back) I made drawings as to how everything stacked up and identified mating holes in various pieces as that area is rather confusing. Not having all the various parts only makes it more difficult. The parts catalog and the link provided by Bob should be of some help and you might be able to find another tractor locally to go and see how the parts go together at this point.
In reviewing the diagrams in my part catalog I can't locate two required support pieces in the views of the radiator and connections along with the one for the hood and radiator grille. The parts I can't locate in those views tie the hood grill housing support to the radiator and if you are missing those parts it would be very difficult to figure it out. Since I can't locate them in my catalog I can't refer to them with a part no. but I certainly do know what they look like from removing them from my 240 and painting them.

Hi again, I found the notes I put together for installing the sheet metal on my Farmall 240 as I took it apart to be used when I reinstalled it later. Send me an email as it is open through this forum and I will be most happy to share with you. I think the main difference in the front end between the Farmall and International 240's is the placement of the head lights on the front sheet metal on the International model. Also, if you are missing something try and describe what you think it might be from the diagrams shown on the link to the CaseIH on-line catalog and I think I can help there as well with descriptions and sketches if necessary. Hope this might help in solving your dilemma, Hal.

How are the 240 Farmall and 240 Utility different in the sheet metal?

I was doing a parts-book comparison and as far as I can tell the main mechanical difference between the two tractors are the front and rear wheels/axles.

Engine's the same. Transmission's the same. Operator's platform is the same. Front bolster is the same.

Other than some minor cosmetic differences the sheet metal from a 240 Farmall and 240 Utility should be the same too.

It appears that it would be very simple to convert a Utility to a Farmall by replacing the wide front with a narrow front from a Super C, and replacing the rear wheels, axles, and axle housings with ones from a Super C as well.

There are numerous differences most of which are not very visible in themselves but the lighting system is totally different and since this thread deals with the sheet metal that is what I tried to assist with. The Farmall model has the lights mounted on the rear fuel tank cover while they are mounted on the front side panels on the Utility model. The lighting is also very different on the rear of the tractor with almost totally different components. The hoods are different due to the under slung exhaust for instance on the Utility model when so equipped along with all the components required for placement along the lower part of the tractor. The size and type of rear wheels causes a different tachometer being required in the instrument panel due to different size rear tires and resulting ground speed variations between the two models. The rear drawbars are different and there are considerable differences in the hydraulics on the back of the tractor in the Tel-A-Depth and Traction Control Systems. If you go through your parts catalog in some detail you will see many instances where different areas are unique to the individual models.
You mention using the front narrow off of a Super C on a Farmall 240 and that would be possible since the pedestals on both models are the same but it ends there due to the different types of wheels used as the axle components are much different between a SC and a Farmall 240. You can do as you suggest if you also use the SC style of cast wheels in lieu of the stamped steel ones of the Farmall 240.
I've spent a couple of years searching for individual parts for my Farmall 240 and I can assure you there are numerous differences where parts from one model will not work on the other. Just spend some time looking in detail at your parts catalog and you will see many of them. The illustrations might be for both models but when you look through the individual referenced parts you will see differences between the Utility and Farmall models. In point, I'm looking for a fast hitch swinging drawbar for my Farmall 240 and the one for the International fast hitch doesn't even look close to the same. If you really want to really and I mean really find all the differences try restoring one and you might be surprised where some of them are. I certainly don't mean this to be a put down to your knowledge but there is nothing like being in the trenches on restoring one as close to original as possible. No wonder you seldom ever see a decent Farmall 240 at a tractor show as nothing unique to that tractor is being reproduced by anyone unless it has other uses on more common tractor models. Original parts are very difficult to find due to the low production number of 240's and especially the Farmall model which is only approximately one forth that of the Utilities at a few over 3500.

A lot of what you consider "irreconcilable" differences, I consider minor. Of course you're looking to make a factory correct model, I'm just daydreaming about building a lookalike "Farmall" 240 or 404 using a relatively common 240 or 404 Utility model and a C or Super C as a donor.

Then I'd probably build a W-2 Utility out of the leftover parts...

I understand where you are coming from now with your explanation and I would be more interested in seeing the W-2 then the look alike 240 you envision. Have fun in your project as I have a hard time thinking in any other direction then doing an originality level restoration, Hal.
P.S. Hope you are not thinking about an original 240 battery cover as you will probably walk on the moon before finding one - I'm very lucky as I was able to acquire a couple of them including a NOS one.

I'm with Mr.Hal...the TH-53b catalog is worth its weight in gold. Ive been restoring my 240-U for several years, locating missing and replacing damaged sheetmetal. Very good advice can be found here on the forum. Id be lost without 'em!
