M steering post

I had to remove the throttle control on my 50 M. One of the bolts broke off in the upper casting. Well my luck being what it is I was able to drill the bolt and get it fairly well centered. When I had the tap about half way in it broke. Imagine that. That is where my luck comes in. Does anyone have any suggestions for getting a broken tap out? The only thing I can come up with is looking for a used casting.

It can be taken out using several methods. with it off, it could be EDMed out with a plunge EDM (good machine shop).
If the hole is a through hole, the tap can be blown out of the hole with an Oxy-acetylene cutting torch, or plasma torch. A quality cold chisel can often be used to break up the tap if there is some sticking out. there are also broken tap removal tools with stiff probes that fit into the flutes of straight fluted taps that can be used. This can involve heating the housing and chilling the tap to create a thermal looseness. Jim

With as many M that are in the bone yards you could probably find a whole new steering stand for less money then a machine shop could repair your old one. Also the casting off of a H is not the same as a M if you are going to go that route.

After looking the post over, I think I am going to look for a whole different steering post. This one is getting kind of crusty down towards the bottom.

I have an extra M steering post. I'm in eastern Iowa, don't know where you're located. Let me know if that helps you.
