I am looking at an Mta that has a fast hitch bolts to side of rear housing have never seen this before were there any of them factory this way also has a dipstick in the side of the block is this correct any help appreciated

main reason I,m wondering is if someone has swapped a newer 450 engine and rear housing or made a (clone)mta serial plate is missing. How can you tell if it is an Mta

SMTA tractors had no fast hitches installed from the factory, there were retro fit kits to convert them (a dealer option either purchased for farm installation, or installed by the dealer) they were not available until after the X00 series were being sold (IIRC).
A dip stick on the engine could be from a replacement factory block, from a power unit, from a different tractor with later production (400 or 450) or it could be drilled by the owner, the cast in boss for the dipstick was already there. Jim

casting codes should be Z for SMTA , our SMTA has the fasthitch from a 400 on it that I believe was the retrofit kit. If you can post pics there are some very well versed guys on here that can tell you exactly what you have.

SMTA, 400 and 450 transmission housings are the same. The fast hitch with traction control that IH started using in 1956 will fit all the bolt holes on a SMTA. Two point with traction control bolts in front to the same holes used for a swinging drawbar anchor for a standard drawbar. Other type 2 point has nothing mounted to the anchor holes.

I agree they didn't have the fast hitch....but I think SMTA's had the bolt holes to install one.

IH had it in the works.

I thought all fast hitches bolted to the sides of the rear end housing. Where else would they bolt?

Yes, the SMTA rear end housing is the same as the 400 and 450, so a real SMTA would be able to support a fast hitch.

The main difference is the 400's fast hitch had an attachment to the top cover/platform that is not on an SMTA. This would require some sort of retrofit bracket, or a top cover from a 400.

The 450's fast hitch would bolt right up to an SMTA, no modifications.

There was always a boss on the block for a dipstick, and sometimes the owner would have them drilled out on an engine rebuild, and install a dipstick.

Look for Z codes on the castings, but beware that there were a few 400's made in 1954 and early 1955 with Z code castings.

There are some "fake" SMTAs out there made from those early 400s.
