400 Hydraulics

Drained sysem, rebuilt the valves, cleaned & flushed. The original filter screen was collapsed, so I put a coverplate over that opening and, filled resavoir and tested it out. All three valves worked fine, no noise or vibration in lines or pump and had good power steering. Put tractor away for a month untill I found a new filter screen. When it arrived I installed it. Started tractor and no hydraulics at all and no power steering.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

On top of the pump is a recessed pipe plug. It is used for priming the pump. Remove the plug and add fluid until the pump is full. Put the plug back in an hope it works. Be sure it get the plug threaded into the hole properly. I messed up the threads on mine and had to replace the pump because I could not keep it from seeping a little fluid.

If removing the plug from the pump and filling it with oil doesn't work, you might try this. Remove the fill plug and apply some air pressure up to 20 lbs. This worked on my 650 when I had the control removed to fix a leak. I couldn't get it to start by just priming the pump. Someone on this forum told me about this trick. Not sure if it will work on a 400 as I think those have a vent so may not build pressure. Al

Under the plug you might find a spring and a ball.
Remove carefully so that you do not lose them. I do not remember for sure.

The air pressure idea worked very well. Since the 400 has an air vent, i removed the vent cap & filter and just used the blow off tool on the air line into the tube for the vent.. It hardly took any pressure at all and I had full hydraulics and power steering back.

Thanks for the help.
