I am in the "business" of tractor pulling. Currently I pull with a low geared H, if you didnt already know that.
Anyways, I have stumbled across a 1947 M. It is just an X1, no A or E or G. The motor is stuck.
He says its been painted, and new decals. Tires and rims are in great shape, and the pictures show it. The guy is looking for $800 but I think I could get it for $500-600.
What is everyones opinion on this thing in tractor pulling?

Also, will things that bolt to the rear axle of an H, bolt to the rear axle of the M? Or is the axle tube bigger?

I'm not sure of your terms. The axle itself, the part that turns, is
2.5" on the H and 2.75" on the M. The axle carriers or housings are
set up so that the same loaders and other implements can be
bolted to an H or an M.

I am looking to use the wheelie bars from the H on the M till I get time to fab up a new set. They bolt up to the axle housing of the H.

If you don't have a letter past the X1, you aren't getting a low geared M. Most everything from the h will bolt across. The front end is slightly narrower on an H. Unless you put a bunch of money into an M, it won't pull well at all.

I would be careful with the stuck motor, I was given
a super m with a stuck motor qnd good tires, its
now a parts tractor because the motor was trash

A couple weeks ago I went and bought an early Farmall M. Last week when I was cleaning her up before doing a little required repair I discovered that there is an X-6 after the serial number. I have not had a chance to check to make sure that the low speed gears are still in the transmission. What speed (MPH) did the 1st gear low speed option provide? Thanks much

I do know this one doesn't have low gears.
The low gear option was 1.5 mph at rated rpms with stock tires I believe.

I'd probably look to pull 5000-9500. Not all classes, not all tracks. Depends. On slick tracks I'd pull 9500. Good clay tracks I imagine this stock M wont have any of that.
With this tractor I would consider the 4" overbore kit and carb enhancements.

Loks to me like the $800 asking price is easily what the tires and rims are worth. Buy it quick before it disappears.

Where the slots in the front and rear of the axle housings are, they are the same size tall and wide. Slot width is around 1/4 inch less on a H.

I passed it up. It would've been worth the money in tires and rims but for what I wanted it for, it would've been a money pit. The tranny wouldn't go into any gear. The motor needed tons of work. The guy had the oil pan off and I could see that the crank had rust on it.
You could probably disassemble it piece by piece and make a really good tractor out of it by reworking everything. I shot an offer of $500. He wasn't interested in that. I wasn't going to spend more on it because of the money it would need to get it going.
Oh well. I am more interested in building a super C puller anyways. A lot cheaper to do.
