super m water pump/camshaft gear

Yee haw With all the great advice you "ole hands" provided I got my super M camshaft gear replaced, put partially back together enough to start it. It started, although the bent wire connector from the coil grounding out on the distributor body gave me some grief. Thank you all!!!
Annother subject:
I read through all the archives but still need some advice. My pump leaked before I tore it down to replace camshaft gear so I added a ring of packing. The service manual says to leave one thread showing on packing nut to determine correct amount of packing. I can't get my nut in that far. I have three threads showing and nut is real tight. The threads look alright. I don't believe I am getting to the packing with the nut. I can stick an awl into the space and there is almost more distance to the packing than my nut is long. The nut and fan driver touch. I have a slight bit of play in and out on the shaft.

After reading the archives this morning I got the spacers and large nut off and figured out my packing nut issue. I now can see that hopefully I have the proper packing.I am still afraid the driver is going to rub against the packing nut. There is a little play in and out on the shaft.

Springs on the driver studs should keep the shaft and driver forward. Hopefully that clears the nut. But if the nut doesn't make it to the packing to squeeze it that's not good.
