Ih 300 utility problem.

Hi fellas, I bought an ih 300 utility. Don't know much about the tractor yet. But I have a problem. I can rock the left rear wheel in and out. Could it be a bearing issue or do I have a bigger problem? I know when I start out in gear the wheel shakes. Please help. Thanks

In and out as in top in bottom out is axle bearings don"t drive it till fixed or it will possibly tear up bull gear and pinion teeth.
If axial in out (top and bottom go in and out at the same time) it is either the bolt holding the bull gear to the axle (inside, but accessible from the IPTO mounting hole).
Either way better fixed than way broken. Jim

Thanks Jim for your help. I will jack it up next weekend and see what I have. If it is a bad bearing, how difficult would it be to replace? Thanks.

If it os only the outer bearing, it isn't too bad. If the inner ball bearing is out, it requires taking off the axle housing. Let us know what you find. Jim

Update: I went out this evening and jacked the rear up. If I grab the tire in the 12 and 6 position there is noticeable play. If I grab the tire in the 9 and 3 position there is a lot of play. Almost like the wheel will fall off. Looking at it closely it seems to be in the hub itself. Is there a bearing in the hub itself? Thanks.

No the hub is splined to the end of the axle. It can be loose and wear at that point. It is easy to remove the bic centered bolt and washer, then slide the wheel/hub off the axle. Put cribbing under the housing to assure no falling, then if it has no liquid in it it should be able to be pulled off. (two people are a good idea, or a cherry picker to hold the weight)
If it is very difficult to remove, the splines and hub might be OK. If easy and loose, it may need to have a good used axle put in as well as bearings and a good used hub. Jim

I took the wheel off this morning, the hub slid off with no effort at all. The axle splines look good to me, but I have included a couple pictures and a video of the hub play. Does it look like I can get by with a hub, or should I replace the axle as well? TIA

I am in the process of doing the exact same thing. I had an axle bearing go out. Mine was the outer bearing and it was in pieces.Once I took apart, I had damage to the dust cap, hub, and axle housing. I was lucky enough to find everything I needed and now will start re-installation soon. I guessing like others say - possibly inner axle bearing. If so, email me and I can give you details of how I took mine apart. I also have all the bearing cross reference numbers if needed.

Axle looks ok to me.

Well I picked up a good used axle and hub. Took the cover off where the pto would be. The bolt on the bull gear came out easy, but can't get the gear off, only about a 1/4". Tried beating on the hub to see if the axle would slide out, but it won't budge. Is there anything inside the axle tube that could be holding it? Maybe a snap ring? Thanks.
