my son bought a 460 ,tried to change points ,cap ,wires , and plugs. now it wont start and it back fires. i also have a 460, i checked to make sure the wires were in the correct order and they are, he didnt move the timing but i wanted to check it anyway, i cant find any marks on his pully, mine has tdc and marks out to 10 deg that i can see . anyone have any info or ideas ? the tune up kit that he bought had points that didnt match the ones already in the tractor, the stationary side of the point isnt just a right angle piece, it also rolls to the right and the condensor is the larger one. i looked at a spare kit i keep for mine and its the same way but when i looked at the ones in my tractor there the same as my sons with the smaller condensor and just the right angle point. we put the original points back in for now just to get it running again. thanks for any input

Two different style points. The 460 take straight stationary point and later model tractors like 706 would take the off set one. It requires a different breaker plate so your timing would be way off if interchanged.

Far as marks, they most likely got rubbed off by the shield under the pulley. Common happening. Should be marked from 10 degrees atdc to 50 degree btdc. The correct timing on a 460 is 30 degrees btdc at full throttle and it should retard near tdc at low idle.

The fiber block that runs on the cam is installed the opposite way on the moveable arm between the two different style point sets. That is what throws the timing off so much between the two.

With some designs you can turn that block 180 degrees on the rivet that holds it. This may allow you to use those points without retiming.

Another case of "if it ain't broke, we'll fix it 'til it is!

If the tuneup parts don't match the originals, do you SUPPOSE he may have been sold the wrong ones?
