Finally found plug to ck trans fluid/oil on my 140 but what size ratchet does it take. Seems like 3/8 drive is a bit big won't go in.

IH sometimes used plugs that take a 5/16 square drive. I just made one on the grinder. Start with a broken 3/8 ratchet, a worn-out 3/8 hex drive, or similar.

True. And some of those plugs can be really tight. But if it works, it works. If it twists into a pretzel, you didn't loose much for trying it.

The real answer is probably a drain plug wrench, but the neighborhood parts store probably won't know what it is.

Ace Hardware has a drawer in the fasteners section with square bar stock. I bought one 5/16" x 1 1/2". Add a crescent wrench and it's done the job for 20 years. Just my 5/16" open-end was too short to give good leverage without a cheater.

The little bar just stays in the underseat tool box.
