IH 674 Air in Hydraulics

I have read through many of the posts but I cant seem to fix my problem. My hydraulics start failing after about 10 minutes of operating. The pump starts whining and the engine gets loaded when the pump cycles on and off. The oil is smoking hot. I"m guessing the pump dies when it gets to hot.
I have replaced the filter and cleaned the screen a number of times now but the problem always comes back. New oil each time. This is getting expensive. The screen isn"t clogged. I have also loosened the bolt with the spring and valve to bleed the air. Fluid is flowing through the radiator up front... I would like to find a diagram showing all of the Hydraulic parts too.
Thanks for any advice.

What screen are you cleaning. The filter bypass screen or the lube pump pickup screen. The one that will give you trouble is the screen on the lube pump inside the transmission. If your oil is getting hot it is because you are running under high pressure and has nothing to do with air. The system is self bleeding except for the brakes as they are a dead end. You need to put a gauge in to see what pressure you are running when all valves are in neutral. It should only be regulated pressure which is less than 300 psi at the pump discharge .

Sounds like what happens when the power beyond is capped off instead of looped to sump.

Other than being on demand do the hydraulics function properly when activated?

I don"t know what all of the components are
unfortunately. There are two attachments not being
used in the rear. I can"t seem to find neutral on the 3
point lift. It lifts the harrows up and down fine while
its cold. The pump is working any position. I"ve got
another slow/fast response lever. Then the pto on off
switch.

I have been cleaning the screen on the outside of the pump under the filter. This past filter and oil change it wasn't dirty. When I bought the tractor the screen was full and pump didn't work. I agree now its stuck on high pressure because the relief valve under the seat goes off when its hot. I have no idea how to get to a screen in the transmission but if there's one its probably clogged.

Today I remembered there is a steel lever below the hand controls for the lift. I don't know what it does but I shifted it to the down position where it was in the up position. I was guessing this might control the rear auxiliary connections. Anyway I made it much longer before having any pump whining.
Could just be the cold weather though. :)
I have also read to overfill the fluid up past the round filter cover. I think it said 5 extra gallons. Anything going to get hurt if I do this?

Whining and hot oil indicate a blockage of oil flow somewhere. Unfortunately, there's no way to be specific about where. You just have to keep looking until you find it.

Changing the oil over and over is a complete waste of money. As long as it's wet and slippery it will work. It could even be significantly contaminated, and it will still work fine. If it looks like oil when you drain it, pour it back in because there's nothing wrong with it.

I was optimistic but none of those changes really did anything. I overfilled the tank by 5 gallons and nothing.

I've been getting about an hours work out of the machine before it starts acting up...then another hour because I'm not finished. I usually am ready to quit by the time the pump quits anyway.

Thanks for everyone's input. This website is a great resource, as is everyone's advice.

I don't know this tractor quite honestly. I don't know how to do what you just said...make sure it's in neutral. I haven't found a neutral anywhere.

You are destroying that pump.

Hi Tony,

Yes, that lever controls rear remote hydraulic outlets. Should be 3 positions, down, neutral,up.
Make sure it is in neutral position.

Was there a front end loader (FEL) or backhoe or some other hydraulic attachment on the tractor before you bought it? Sometime ago on this board someone had bought a tractor like yours that previous owner had a FEL on it with a power beyond adapter on the hydraulics. Well previous owner just removed FEL and plugged the power beyond port so hydraulic pump was always under load and pressure relief valve squealing. This tractor has an open center hydraulic system so the oil flows in a continuous loop unless PS, PB, 3pt or remote hydraulics are activated. It sounds like somewhere on your tractor the loop is broken.

Finally its FIXED! It was the auxiliary lever that wasn't in neutral (red lever at the bottom of the other levers). There is another space for a lever that was never installed, I'm assuming for a bucket in the front. Glad it was something simple. I used it all day long today and no noise and it wasn't hot.
Time to give it a good power wash and put it all back together.

Thanks again everyone for the input. You don't know how close I was to taking it to a shop and writing a blank check.
