664 Fuel Filter bottom Glass ???

Why glass? The fuel filter bottom is glass on the IH 664 filters. Changed filters, was double careful with the gaskets; one leaked, tightened more, nearly stopped leaking; one more little turn, explosion, glass and fuel everywhere. Tempted to double gasket next time. Wonder if anyone makes a metal base?

Best guess it was to see the sediment and water in bottom of the filter?

Please check the D-239 parts section in the CaseIH parts website and see if there a possible replacement metal or after market fuel bowls bottoms available for your D-239 engine.

Had a 364 that after cleaning the glass bowl after three days later in middle of the night it just exploded and drained a full tank of dsl. So guess a little loose is better that to tight when it comes to glass bowls

That 664(based on 656) was one tough tractor, great bush hogging tractor. Powerful, tough, heavy and pretty much bullit proof.

I had to fight with those glass bowls on the D-310 engines. When they were out in the open it wasn't too bad but when they put them on a combine along the grain tank they were impossible. I found the later style filter base that used a plain spin on filter and eliminated the problem.

I think it was an 84 Hydro that I bought another filter head assembly for and replaced those glass bowl filters with twin spin-ons. I don't remember if the head assembly was in the parts book for that tractor, the engine book, or in another tractor's parts book, but the parts man knew immediately what I wanted when I asked.

I have a late model 684 with the d239 and it has double, spin on filters. The conversion parts are likely still available from Case/IH or a tractor salvage yard. Any time you can get rid of another gasket and breakable part is a worthwhile upgrade.

I just finished bush hogging my 40 acres and that 684 sures makes good power while sipping fuel. I'm also greatful for the easy to remove grill as late season mowing causes the rad and hydraulic cooler to plug up with crap and I have to clean it daily.

Thanks for the input, folks. Never thought about a later style filter head assembly for the spin-ons. this forum is the best.
