240 battery drain revisited

I removed the voltage regulator and found no markings as to what the ground should be. The battery was installed with the neg. to ground. I have unhooked everything in the charging system and the ignition system and still get a 3 volt discharge. I reversed the battery and installed it pos. ground, polarized the VR and started it up and the amp. meter discharged. I then changed everything back and polarized the VR again and started the tractor and the amp. meter showed a charge and it was 9 volts on my meter. I unhooked the pos. cable and I then had a 5 volt drain. So much for progress. Is the light switch on the left side of the instrument panel? There is a switch there that is broken off and a sheet metal screw has been screwed into it. None of the lights come on when I hook the battery up no matter where the switch is. I could not get the throttle lever off to pull the instrument panel so maybe tomorrow with some PB Blaster. I also need to know which hydraulic fluid it takes as it is bone dry. I think I will be bald before I get this one figured out. Thanks

Sorry, my mistake. The light switch is up in the middle of the panel and seems to work fine.

Fudd, the Farmall-International 240 came from the factory six volt, positive ground. The other posters gave good advice. Regarding hydraulic fluid; the discussions continue...IH Hytran or IH spec hydraulic fluid from a convenient to your locale farm supply business. I also suggest hollering at Farmallhal as he has been doing a superb restore of his Farmall 240. Wear a cap and you won't sunburn your bald head

It should be Positive ground as stated above (or below). There will be a wire connecting the starter switch (either a round can relay or a rod and pull lever switch) to the electrical box. The wire connects inside to the amp meter. (it should be the only thing attached. The light switch should be connected either to the voltage regulator L terminal, or the other terminal on the amp gauge.
The ignition push pull switch (or key) should be connected to that same amp gauge terminal. A 4 to 5 volt draw would either be lights or at least make heat. Jim
