diesel 504 with next to no oil pressure

I seem to have a few problems with my diesel 504. The first on the list to figure out is why it has no oil pressure, or about maybe 15 psi when it first starts up and about 5 psi after it is warm. Talking to one person they said to check the pressure relief valve, then the oil pump. Not sure yet how to tell if they are worn when I get to them, but where is the pressure relief valve at?

Pull the oil pan and take a look at the cover on the oil pump, it can blow the thin gasket or warp the alloy cover.

The diesel 504 uses the D188 engine, 4 cylinder version of the D282. The oil pump uses a cast steel bottom plate rather than the aluminum that the gas engine uses. Warping is not a problem with those pumps but they do get worn and the shim gaskets may also blow out. Depending on what oil filter base is on the engine there may be a problem with the relief valves.

Since you have some pressure I'm more apt to think it's your oil pump. My co-worker had a Ford with the 352cid engine and oil light came on and the hydraulic valves started chattering. We put a gauge on it and still no pressure. He pulled the pump and found the relief valve open.
Called me at work to pick up a new pump and I helped him to install the new pump. The old pump had lots of sludge since it was used mostly on short drives. Hal

If that engine has an external oil pressure relief valve I"d check it before pulling the pan. My 544 had a sudden attack of very low oil pressure a few years ago that turned out to be due to a warn relief valve. Low probability but easy to check.

On the other hand, low pressure in my 8N turned out to be due to gunk in the pickup tube (the screen was missing).

Took out the relief and there was a good amount of iron filings in there. Got them cleaned out, and oil pressure got up to about 30 psi then backed off to about 25 psi after warming up at about half throttle. This seems a LOT better, but should it be a little higher?

The diesel engine on that 504 is a little different than the 6 cyl as it has the relief valve in the block and oil is piped to filter. I would sure take a look in the oil filter also for metal flakes as they are the root cause of your oil pressure problems. Time to drop pan and start looking things over.
