560d pull start only

Hello to all! As the subject indicates I have a 560d that will only start by pulling. It will start after pulling @ 100' and smoke like it's running rich.Tractor won't start turning over even with 2 hot 12 volt batteries, and brand new glow plugs. The glow plug meter will peg out and wiring has been replaced correctly. I know the tractor was timed correctly at 3 degree btdc on compression stroke on #1 cylinder, however the injector pump was timed using air in #1 port on the injector pump as the scribe mark in timing window is nonexistent.I know this will indicate start of injection time and the pump should be timed at the end of injection time but I have tried to educated guess where that is.Is there some way to put air on #1 port and time the tractor at something different than 3 degrees btdc to allow for end of injection timing? I'm at a loss for a direction to go with this issue.I've received plenty of help from this site and
appreciated every bit of it.Feels like the tractor is pretty close to where it needs to be,but the two of us need a little more help.As always all help is appreciated. ARKIE

If the retainer mark for 63.5 degrees can't be seen bring the # 1 pump port around again, and air time it at 20 degrees BTDC. this will get you close to where it should be.

Air timing is not very accurate, but OK ..use what is at hand. I would suggest a fitting for the port so you can hear well when the air changes. The timing mark can be faint sometimes, use a strong light and try different angles

Thanks so much Dieseltech! This is the information I've been needing.Maybe I can loosen the two nuts and turn the whole pump, after doing what you recommended and get it close enough to start on her own. Thanks again. ARKIE

Thanks for responding Hydrotek. I've tried all types of lights and even looked at night, and no luck. I think Dieseltech has me getting close with his post.Trying his advice this weekend and will keep everyone posted. ARKIE

Arkie, How did you mont the glowplugs they should be
mounted between injector line and valve cover. We had the same issue hard starting smoking 560 but when it started it ran fine.

Pre-cups could be upside down. As I understand it this will increase compression giving more horse power but will have to be pull started. A neighbor had one of these that he brought used. Hope the Tractor Vet checks in as it would be interesting to here his comments. Armand

Ok! I told everyone I'd give a report on what I've accomplished on my 560d this weekend.I timed the tractor at 20 degrees btdc on the compression stroke by pulling glow plug and feeling air coming from glow plug hole. I then put air on #1 port on the pump and felt the the shaft lock in place. I reinstalled the three bolts on the timing gear and reinstalled all remaining hardware. After pull starting the tractor and letting it run about 10 minutes,I shut the tractor off and managed to start again by turning it over using a whiff on gas on a rag.I hit the glow plugs about a minute before trying to start it and the glow plug meter pegged out as it should have with brand new glow plugs. The glow plugs are above the injector lines. This was the only time I could get it started by turning it over. I noticed the tractor smoked quite a bit when it was running and a fair amount of blowby coming from tube. The starter had smoke coming out of it after 10 seconds of turning over even if I let it set for a while.I'm thinking it may need rebuilt because it doesn't seem to turn over as fast as it used to.
I've replaced the cables and used two 12 volt hot batteries with no change how fast it turns over.Still fighting it,but not giving up!ARKIE

glow plugs, good starter and big battery/cables are three things most 560's need to start correctly. Ive done the same stuff you've been dealing with. it'll be the last time I buy a non-running diesel....
