have a farmall b with generator/vr. left the key on by accident and the battery discharged. the thing is, i had the negative cable disconnected. How did the discharge happen??

If the battery ground cable was physically disconnected there's only a couple possibilities:

1 - The battery is worn out (it's discharging itself internally), or

2 - The generator is not charging. So when you last shut down the tractor the battery was already nearly dead.

Leaving the ignition switch on with the ground cable disconnected cannot cause a dead battery(!)

There is no key for the B so that means some wiring is messed up somewhere and it should be pos gnd pluss you probably have a bad battery is the battery wet on top lots of problems somewhere
