4100 shifting issues

I picked up a 4100 this summer,I'm having trouble getting it
into reverse. The lever moves freely, but most times just grinds
when in reverse position. It will go into reverse the odd
time, but it usually takes some time.It shifts into the other
ranges fine. The PO has passed on,so I can't ask him about it either.I have an IH service manual, but it doesn't have any info on adjustments or anything on linkages.Thanx in advance.

Now not being the local wizz kid here on the 4100's as i have only worked on one , more then likely it is the same as any 06-66 trator . So your problem can not be ADJUSTED out and will require REPAIR . So my best guestamation on this is that it will need a new range cover , maybe a new cam , a new rev. shift lever and maybe a new rev. shifting fork .

Cover can be machined for a bushing. The pivot is replaceable and then if the reverse fork is not worn or the key loose it should work fine unless the problem has ground the teeth off to the point it will not engage. The cam could also need replaced. Yes they work the same as the 4166 which is like the 06 series. If one of the rollers is missing it will act that way also.
