Hugh McKay; in Memory

October 23 (Friday), 2009: Four years ago we lost our friend Hugh. Hope his family, especially his wife Marg, is doing well.

He helped many of us and added spice to the forum.

With sincere respect, Hendrik.

I miss Hugh. From conversations on here, we emailed back and forth quite a bit. He was an invaluable help on a number of my tractor issues. In the last email I had from him, he was weighing the pros and cons of rebuilding his 130. It doesn't seem possible it's been four years. I lost a 5 year old nephew in an accident on the farm the day before Hugh died, and I was in shock so badly that I sort of missed the news of Hugh's death until sometime later.

I've been thinking about his passing more a few weeks now. Some dates just stick to my noggin'. "Hughie" was knowledgable, opinionated, friendly...I miss his posting. I hope Marq, Sandy and others of Hugh's family are well.

I had the pleasure of meeting Hugh. He was running a gravel truck for some company and they were hauling gravel from a pit twenty miles north of our farm,Hugh and I figured it out and one day I was working on a roof and I heard an air horn going by..'bout an hour later this big truck drove in..had a great visit,he did stop in again with his BIL for a visit, interested in the farm, the tractors, the cattle..just a super friendly guy..and he was a big man,yes I miss his posts too!

Hugh was a good guy. Quite a wealth of practical experience. His occasional disagreement with the odd poster made for some interesting reading. He helped me get started over a decade ago and he helped me again this year when I was looking for a "big" tractor. I have in my archives a post he made regarding his opinion on the best IH tractor made. I took the advice to heart and so, four years after his passing, he still is helping me along.

BUT...he is not the only one. Without mentioning any names lest I slight someone unintentionally, thank you to all who so patiently help me through my trials year after year! You keep me from looking like I know what I am doing!

I too miss Hugh's presence on this board.

I had the pleasure of once meeting Hugh and Marg for lunch as the traveled thru western NY on their way home from a "parts run". We enjoyed a couple delightful hours of conversation around tractors, farms and family.

In parting we agreed to meet again soon. Sadly it never happened...

I always liked Hugh's post even when he set me straight on a couple of occasions. He earned my respect and his presence is certainly missed. Fortunately for my ego he tended to post concerning the offsets and I take only limited interest in those so I got to just lurk about and read his wisdom and experience.

I miss him, too. We never met face-to-face, but e-mailed and chatted on here a lot. We got aquatinted when he posted on the Deere board asking questions about one of the old side-discharge W-114 or W-116 Deere balers. I was able to send him some pictures of one of them.

A year or so later, he was able to hook me up with "That Damn Dutchman" who makes the best Gouda cheese in Upper Economy, Nova Scotia.

Rest in Peace. Good Friend

Stan

Hi Everyone,
This past August my wife and I were on holiday in Nova Scotia and we had a wonderful quick visit with Hugh and Marg's daughter Marilyn. We had a great chat about her Dad and Mom. Her Mom is still living in Western Ontario, doing well and growing a large garden as always. Hugh's offset Farmalls are being used by his son to work Marg's garden.
I told Marilyn how we all missed Hugh and how he was a valued contributor to this board.

If anyone is travelling in the vicinity of Windsor Nova Scotia, I am sure Marilyn would welcome you just as she did to us two strangers that rang her door bell.

Hi, do you have Marilyn's address or where I can make contact. I belong to a tractor club in Windsor and will be going to the club in the morning. I could give her a call or email and pass on the infomation about Hugh that has been said in these messages. I am sure Marilyn would be proud to read all these nice comments. Cheers, Murray

every time i'm baling with my fast hitch 560, I get to laughing about hugh's description of his as "putting a 5' log chain between the tractor and implement and trying to follow the row" before he replaced the fast hitch with a straight drawbar. mine isn't quite that bad, but close. hugh sure had a lot of insights.

Few yrs back i did stop and visit with him over the yrs i did sent him stuff he couldnt get easy. Had a great visit great friend we passed lots of e-mails.

I too love the off-set Farmalls and in my many internet searches the name "Hugh McKay" has come up more than once. We can carry the torch that men like him have passed to us by sharing the knowledge they have given us. That's how we can all honor his memory.

Yesterday's Tractors is where I learned most everything I needed to, to build my tractor.

Good thread.

I stopped in and visited with Hugh and Marg in the fall of 2008, one year before he died.

Last year, in September, my wife and I stopped to see Marg and her son Sandy. Sandy still uses Hugh's tractors with helping Marg in her large garden.

They both are doing well. Wonderful people.

I never got to meet Hugh in person, but he and I also emailed a bit. Practical knowledge, experience, spunky, and a true kind heart "wishing to help" sums Hugh up. He represented what is a slowly dying breed today: honest, straight forward, and a wealth of BTDT. I respected him immensely and enjoyed chatting with him when I could.

Good man. Good to hear his family is doing fine and continuing to live his legacy.

Hugh loved to argu....er....DEBATE.....Yeah, that's better, debate! (I must confess, So do I) Me and him went at it on a number of occasions. More than once we BOTH took a side on an issue where we both actually had the same opinion, but it was more fun to do the "point/counterpoint" thing! He could hold his own, even when arguing a side he actually didn't agree with. I miss the old cuss! Too many people that CAN'T argue a point and still be friends when it was over. Hugh was always a friend first.
