Help with IH loader cylinder

Help!! I have a IH 2000 loader with a leaky cylinder. Ordered a kit frombaums and have the parts breakdown. Problem is how to ger the retaining key out. I can turn the cylinder head either direction but the retaining key does NOT turn with the head. It should, right? Right now I cant find the gap in the retainer because of this. Ideas? I tried tapping the key retainer with a small punch but no movement. Any other tricks to rebuilding these?

The head of the cylinder has a hole and the retaining ring has a tang that goes in the hole, turn the head slowly and look closely for the hole. If you can see the end of the retaining ring, be sure it engages the hole, you may need a small punch to bend the retaining ring

One of the common problems with this retainer was the tang would break off, you can break the retainer and bend it into the hole or maybe use vice grips to pull it out

Either way, not a fun job

The only thing I can see that that rotates with the head is what I
would call a lock or snap type ring that sits next to the bigger
keystock retainer. You can just see part of it on the bottom of
the slot in the cyl pipe. Is that part of what comes out? The kit
came with about a foot long keystock with a 90 on the end.
What is the install procedure?

the square retainer should spin as you turn the head (tang sticks in the hole) to reinstall the lock just stick the tang in the hole and rotate one revolution, trim off the excess retainer

sometimes the groove will wear out and the slot and groove in the head will no longer align, you may need to tap the head into the cylinder some to align the groove

half of the groove is in the bore and the other half is in the head, kind of a weak joint, but that is what we have to work with

Thanks for the replies. I finally got it apart after about 2 hours of screwing with it. The "tang" was broken off and the retainer was not turning with the head. Finally got the retainer split and got the pieces out. Piston is scored a little in one spot but the barrel cylinder looks pretty good. Where the head and barrel meet is rusted some and rough - I am thinking I need to smooth this up so I don"t damage the new seals.
