Farmall M gas tank cover problem

I'm in the woods every good day hauling firewood with my M and trailer. If i fill Martha full of gas the cap lets the gas leak out on the paint. It has a gasket in the cap and seems to get tight when you turn it. but gas still leaksout. can you buy new gaskets for the cap? maybe i need a thicker one, i never had this problem with my other tractors. Anyone solve this problem before? Thanks Kent

Do you still have the old style cap ? Can't tell by the picture. Old style only an inch or so high.

IH had big problem years ago and gave out a free triple baffle tall cap. Subject came up on here a few months ago and one of our guys gave out the place to go to still get a free one.

Also if the cap and gasket is good the tank fill hole maybe misshapen. IH made a tool to straighten where the cap goes and I think someone is reproducing the tool now.
 
You will need to find someone that has a gas tank filler neck reforming tool. The neck is probably distorted over the years and isn't sealing properly.

IH made this tool and most dealers had one at the time. Some may still. Just have to inquire. You will see them from time to time for sale.

I found where I remembered seeing them. Pilot Knob Restorations is selling them now. I found the ad in the latest Red Power Magazine. So unless HydroTek is offering, at least you have an option to purchase one.

Just saying I have one of the originals, pics and dims if necessary ..but if you can buy a new one, then that is the way to go
 
Thanks Guys. I do have the original low gas cap. I am not a fan of the higher ones. I'll look into the pilot knob tank fix. Thanks for the info. Kent
