I am installing the automatic row marker controller in my 1586. The connections look like some Packard 56 connectors I found on line and I need to install a couple on a fused link I am inserting in between the control box and the light harness hookup. None of which matters, but I thought I would mention it.

My question is the procedure for installing these connectors. There is a crimp on metal connector and then a black plastic cover. The covers snap together to lock the connection. Do I put the wire thru the cover before crimping on the connector or do I crimp on the connector and then insert it into the cover? Anyone familiar with these? Thanks!

Crimp the terminal on the wire first and then put them into the NON MATING end of the plastic shell.

The female ends must be oriented correctly so the locking tang catches. If you can, look at an assembled one to see how it goes. The male ends I think will lock either way they are turned. HTH.

I do a lot of 56 Delco stuff and i have the crimper to do it all in one shot . Ya do the end and then they slide into the insultator and lock in . If ya need to take them apart you can make a TOOL out of a cotter pin by just filing it flat on the rounded side and you insert it on the plug in side and that will push the tab down so you can remove it from the insulator , then if you want to put it back in ya just bend the tang back up and stuff it back in. As for fueses i gave up on FUSES years ago i now use self resetting breakers . Each and every tractor i work on a wiring problem the fuses is the first think that gets removed and a breaker is put in place .

Hey TV, thanks for the info! I'm with you on fuses. Back in the day I installed a lot of car stereos, CB radios and car alarms and fuses are like the weak link in the chain. One you need, but still a nuisance when they blow and you don't have a replacement. Maybe you could save me a little legwork? Where does one buy these self resetting breakers? And does that crimping tool have a name? I may need to add one to my collection.

NAPA or any other GOOD parts store. Also places like big truck parts places . . Terminal Supply is where i get my stuff from as they have everything you need for wiring , lighting , even the loom for making up factory org. looking wiring harnesses . They even have the crimpers for the one shot crimp, BUT you will not like the price on them .

That's why God invented pawn shops! Is this the tool? Guess I am not understanding what the difference is between "one step" and "two step". Must be part of the installation I am not familiar with.
expensive crimpers

They don't all have to be expensive tools.

The one on the left is a Snap-On Blue point PWC-12 which also crimps spark plug wire ends and standard terminals. The center one is Blue Point PWC -15 that has two sizes for the Packard 56 connectors. The one on the right is from Mac Tools, tool number TCT1026. It has five sizes for the Packard style connectors.

Sorry for the fuzzy picture. After the first picture my camera batteries were too low to take another one.
