Flail Mower

How big of a flail mower will my M handle? I do have a 3pt hitch. Have a state sale coming up in a few weeks, and would like to get a flail mower.

Its mostly old fescue, some weeds and heavy in some spots, thin in others. the listing has 5', 6', and 7' flail mowers, varying conditions, but I was thinking about one the 5', if I could run in 3rd gear mostly. I have a bush hog, or brush cutter, or whatever its being called these days, actually have 2 and neither give the finish Im looking for without a 2nd cutting, and in some spots a 3rd just to spread the grass! The guy who use to cut it for bedding would always go over it with his 706 and flail mower after the first frost just to make it look pretty. He stopped doing it a few years ago, and I just want it to look good again!

For what it is worth. For years we used a 6' Ford flail mower behind our 9N Ford. Just used it for mowing large yard areas.

I used a 6' Ford flail behind my S-55 Oliver (33HP) for several years. A flail is not the best in taller weeds or grass, mainly made for short to mid height grass or weeds. I did some custom mowing for a while and in stuff over about 8" to a foot, depending on what it was, I might have to go over it a couple of times. Mowed a patch of wild marijuana for a farmer one time that was over my head standing up on the tractor, but it was only about 1/2 acre... took about 6 passes in 1st gear to knock it down. If you want to do anything a foot tall or over, get a whirlcut. I mowed my 2 acre yard with it and it did a nice job of that, and I mowed a housing development recreation area about once a month for several years in the summer.

A discbine is great if you can afford it but my Matthews works fine on tall stuff. It just sucks up a lot of power.

Whats a whirlcut? the guy who used to cut the field
used, what I call, a discmower, but it left rows,
which I dont want. Sounds like a flail mower isnt
the way to go, with my M. I cant spend all week
cutting it in first gear, although I could cut it
with my bushhog first, then hit it with the flail.

I think "whirlcut" = rotary mower.

Like a bush hog, just not as heavy-duty.

Flail mower will just wrap up with taller stuff.

(quoted from post at 14:24:11 10/18/13) I think "whirlcut" = rotary mower.

Some call them whirlcut, rotary, Bush Hog (which is actually a brand name) brush hog, etc. Whatever they are called, since he already had some "whirlcuts", if he wants to finish it nicer, follow up with a flail, but do the rotary first on the taller stuff. Flails were made for parks, short rough on golf course, etc.

I have two alamo flails that I got in a trade and what they will cut depends on what type/weight of knives it has on it. The one that does best for me has the heavier knives attached to the drum with a clevis and pin. The other one has lighter/longer knives attached directly to the flanges on the drum. It works better in shorter grass and leaves a nice finish. It is a 6ft. cut.

The 7ft has the heavier knife set up and I cut johnson grass and weeds as tall as the tractor. These knives have a higher tip speed than the six footer. The weeds cut better than the johnson grass on the first pass. Heavy patches of johnson grass require me to drop down a gear and/or make a second pass.

What I like about flails is the way they 'shred' the material and leave it even on the field. Another bid plus is that they will pick up and cut your tracks out. Assuming that the mower is wider than the tractor tread width, or somewhat offset. I use it behind a Massey 253(48hp). Have not had it behind M or MD. We do use an 8ft rotary cutter behind a Super MTA diesel. That is all it can stand in heavy grass.
