Did something Dumb!

[b:77508e2f6b]OK, I know better but what's done is done. After installing fluid in the rears of my 300 today, I took it out for a quick run. Everything went good until........

When I got back to my driveway, I didn't come to a complete and full stop before downshifting into 2nd, which is now who knows what gear. Pretty sure I'm between a couple gears due to the fact when I let out the clutch the engine wants to stall. I got it into some sort of neutral and coasted downhill to the shop.

Question is, how do I get it back to normal? I assume I pull the shift lever and line up some gears and slap the shift lever back in? Is it that easy or am I in for a lot of work?

used to happen all the time on my 340. like you said, pull shifter and get all slots lined up and put back in. mine worked best if I was level. I finally stretched springs under shifter and no problem since. 300 may be different though.

Pull the shift lever and align the slots in shift rails and carefully lower the lever back in place. Be careful when you pull the lever as there are poppet springs and detent balls under the lever housing. They may stay in place if you are careful, just don"t let them come up out of their holes. the bottom of the lever/finger is worn. Some guys weld it up and grind it back to size. I just try to be careful shifting! Mark

Many Many posts and pictures in the archives. A sloppy shifter Kit is usually on Ebay, it works for the lever movement control. The tip pictures is correct for the 300. The wierd shifter on the tractor causes twisting action that makes it get worse faster (50 years instead of 40_ Jim

Have the same trouble with my 450 when I'm not careful with a shift, just make sure you have the tires blocked when you do it, I usually have to rock the tractor back and forth to get pressure off the gear in question.

[b:e97bb534ce]Thanks for the quick replies and it really is an easy fix. Like my dad always said....It's not a problem if you can fix it! And that's what I did this morning. Popped off the shifter and after jacking up the rear wheels got all three little bars realigned. The end of the shift rod really wasn't that bad so I put it back on. A quick test run and just like new! I decided to look at my parts tractor's shifter assembly and it was near new with no wear so I pulled it and am in the process of cleaning and painting it. Nothing like a little lipstick on a pig.
