Camshaft gear fell off.

I am finally getting back to repairing my SM since
my camshaft nut fell off. Have a new gear, nut and
keeper. I need to find the archives so I can time the camshaft gear to the
crankshaft gear. Do you just line up the dots? I
figure the answer is in the archives but can't seem to
find them. Thanks for any help you can provide.
 
Simply align the timing marks on the cam gear with the marks on the crank and distributor drive gears.

If memory serves (it's been a few years since I did mine...) the single mark on the cam gear aligns with the crankshaft gear mark and the double mark on the cam gear (located 180 deg opposite) aligns with the distributor gear mark.

Just make sure the distributor rotor button is pointing at the #1 plug tower on the cap before you mount the cam gear. (If the rotor is pointing to #4, give the distributor drive gear 1 full turn to bring it into time before mounting the cam gear.)
 
I was hoping it was that simple. I appreciate your advice. I hope she fires up. That would be real nice. My snow shovel and I are ready for some time apart. Talk around here in NE Kansas is more heavy snowfall this year.

Hey Bob, I guess my gear is different than others. My crankshaft gear (see pic) has no timing marks. I have a picture in my manual so will have to go by that. Only thing I can figure out to get the timing right is get TDC on No 1, put the camshaft gear on and check to see if I have compression on No 1. Any better ideas I would love to hear them. Next question. Is this next pic an oil flinger? Goes between the crank pulley and crankshaft pinion gear. I hope it is because it's not available for sale anywhere. Thing is, how does that fling oil? I guess if that is the oil flinger I won't question how it works.Thanks in advance.

Markalayne - Here's a shot of an OEM Super M camshaft gear. Note the single punch mark at 3 o'clock, and the 2 small "parenthesis" marks 180 deg opposite. I've seen gears also with double punch marks instead of the "parenthesis" marks.

The oil slinger uses centrifugal force to through the oil off of it to keep the oil away from the front seal. The rear seal slinger is built into the crankshaft.
 
There isn't a punch mark on my gear, just the raised
circle with the small slot. I have a punch mark on
the crankshaft gear and it is pointing towards the
camshaft with No 1 cylinder at TDC. My manual shows
the keyway at about 7:30 when the gears are lined
up.
 
May be a dumb question here, but are the pictures of the same side of the gear? Doesn't appear to me that they are, at least the pictures are sure different.
 
Not a dumb question IHFan but very observant and helpful. The picture I took is of the side that goes toward the tractor. I thought just the opposite. Bob's appears to be the front of the gear, the longer "flange" to set the gear farther out from the camshaft. I just looked at my old gear and discovered my error. My old gear has a punch mark. So . . .If all gears are the same as far as key slot and the timing mark I now know it should be installed. Thanks IHfan
