IH544 IPTO Housing Seal Ring

Any information on this part? It's a big rubber lip seal with no garter. It goes around the PTO housing, sealing aginst the rear casting. The parts manual lists 384486R but says that it's only for serial numbers lower than mine.

It is the sealing O-ring between the rear frame and the PTO housing. Later serial number tractors use gasket number 530690R1 instead of the O-ring.

Well, what I took out wasn't an o-ring (and, as you say, tractors with my s.n. didn't use the ring anyway) but it wasn't a gasket either. It worked --there were no leaks-- but it isn't in very good shape. Thanks for the part number: now I know what to order (or maybe just make).

They are not a true round cross section O-ring. They are flat on the bottom where they seat on the PTO housing. They are kind of a hexagon shape with a wide bottom.

After some study I concluded that the seal that was in there when I took the PTO out was the wrong part as there was no groove for it (not the only oddity in this machine: the TA had two extraneous o-rings). I fabricated a gasket and reassembled. We"ll see in a couple of days when I get everything else back together.

The ring you mention was used on the face of the PTO housing ..there would have been a groove for it to sit in, otherwise a gasket was used. Either way, if there are no leaks = a job well done
