I think IH thought the engine was so large that gravity feed would not supply enough fuel. I ran mine for years without the pump did not notice any difference with or without it.

(quoted from post at 15:01:50 10/16/13) On my 1949 I dont even have a place for one

Really?

If WOpp comes around he will be able to shed some light on the subject. I know he taught me a lot about them one night. I haven't seen him in a couple weeks. Maybe he is busy with honey harvest???

I have a 48 model W9 that my dad bought in 1957 It has a fuel pump, but it was just looped off. Gas line went straight to the carb. I run it for years It sure never was short on gas without the pump working. My 600 has fuel pump hooked and working my 650 has it removed with gas straight to carb. I don't know why they were using a pump other than the old F 12 14 20 used the same pump. Rebuild kits are still easy to get. You sure don't need it . It will burn more $4.gas in half a day than I want to buy.

One more thing if your fuel pump goes bad they will fill the crankcase with gas. Maybe that is why some were deleted. Gas is tough on bearings.
