Super m gas tank

Gents,

Got a super m tank that needs some cleaning. Have heard of using gravel sand or marbles and attaching to tractor wheel and driving around. Also heard of taking it to a radiator shop to remove rust. Any suggestions? Cheapest? Quickest ?

I have had 2 cleaned at the radiator shop and was pleased both times. However, if they submerge it the paint will be gone. Ellis

Don't stick foreign objects in the tank, they can get stuck behind the baffles. I have sucessfully cleaned several gas tanks with a muratic acid soloution. Granted, it takes several days to let the acid solution eat away at the rust, but it will clean down to shiny bare steel.

What is your mixture of the muratic acid? I would like to do
that myself if possible.

The strength of the solution is not critical. A stronger solution will eat the rust off faster though. I have never measured, I just pour some water in the tank and then pour in some acid.
I would think 4 parts water to 1 part acid will be a good start. Look on the side of bottle of acid, it may give solution strengths there too.
If just the bottom of the tank is rusty, then a few gallons of solution will suffice. But if the rust goes up the sides then you would have to use more or rotate the tank to allow the acid solution to work on the sides.
