Front Axle on an H

Hi I am in a tractor restoration class and I am
wondering if the front axle is one piece or if it
can be removed. We took the rivet out but can not
get the axle out.

Need more info.Is it a wide or narrow?Do you mean the 'spindle'(the part the wheel bearing go)?On both fronts, the spindle is riveted but is not removeable/serviceable.

I will assume you are talking about a narrow front. It appears that the spindle SHOULD be removable from the rest of the assembly by removing that BIG rivet. I tried it myself on a front end that was already junk, so nothing to lose, but I had absolutely NO luck. I came to the conclusion it would require massive amounts of heat to get it RED hot, and EXPAND, and then MAYBE it would come apart. On the other hand, those individual parts are not available anyhow, so why bother?

You will need a larger press than is likely available to your class. A replacement pedestal is your best bet and a LOT LESS frustration & expense.
PS: a narrow front pedestal from an M Farmall is NOT the same as an H.

At one time IH sold replacement axles for the bolster. Part number 48540DF. But not practical for most people to change.

I have a good H narrow front I would donate to the project for 20 dollars, free shipping. Or free and $20 shipping. email is open
